Published: February 18, 2025
Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America Sonic I, the legendary land speed record car, is set for auction with a price estimate between $500,000 and $1 million, notably less than a new Lamborghini Revuelto. This enormous vehicle, measuring over 34 feet long, is a significant piece of American automotive history, being the first car to break the 600 mph barrier. The auction is being handled by RM Sotheby's on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, which is retooling its collection.
Breedlove's achievements in land speed records marked the beginning of the Jet Age in automotive history. His first record of 407.447 mph was followed by a series of ever-faster attempts that showcased both the risks and engineering challenges associated with speed. His record-setting runs were not only milestones in speed but also demonstrated the evolution of automotive technology, with the Sonic I featuring advanced engineering for its time, including a powerful GE J79 turbojet engine.
From a transportation expert's perspective, this auction not only highlights a crucial chapter in automotive racing but also underscores the cultural significance of speed in American history. The fascination with land speed records reflects humanity's relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries and is indicative of innovation in vehicle design and engineering. Collecting such historic vehicles can foster interest in engineering and inspire future generations in STEM fields, while also preserving a vital part of automotive heritage.
