Scout Motors design boss: production cars will look “very close” to concepts

Scout Motors is moving forward with the production of its new vehicles, the Traveler SUV and Terra Truck, which are set to launch in 2027. Design chief Chris Benjamin confirmed that the production models will closely resemble the concepts showcased at CES, with minor differences that will likely go unnoticed by most consumers. He emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the brand's historical vehicles, particularly the iconic proportions and distinctive design elements of the International Harvester models from the 1960s and 70s. Benjamin explained that while they embrace their heritage, they aim to avoid creating mere replicas of the original models. Features such as the volume placement and window line have been carefully integrated into the designs, which also avoid the retro-styling pitfalls of other automotive revivals. The interiors focus on user-friendly controls, favoring physical buttons over touchscreens, as he believes this reduces cognitive load while driving. In response to the Tesla Cybertruck, Benjamin acknowledged its disruptive design but expressed a desire for his team's products to be more approachable. This strategic differentiation reflects a broader sentiment in the industry, where many consumers are looking for vehicles that blend modern technology with practical usability, suggesting potential growth in the market for more traditional, user-friendly designs among new electric vehicles.
