Cologne offers night taxi vouchers to help women get home safely
Published: February 25, 2025
Cologne has initiated a night taxi voucher program aimed at enhancing the safety of women and gender-diverse individuals when traveling home after dark. The "Women's Night Taxi" scheme provides 1,500 vouchers valued at €10 each for taxi rides between 10 pm and 6 am, valid only with the taxi company Taxi Ruf, and is set to continue until August 2025. This initiative draws inspiration from similar programs in other German cities like Munich, which increased its voucher amount from €5 to €10 due to heightened demand. While the initiative is generally well-received, critics point out that the €10 value may not adequately cover the cost of taxi rides in urban areas, raising concerns about its effectiveness.
Recent studies indicate that a substantial portion of German women feel unsafe using public transportation at night, with research revealing alarming statistics regarding harassment and threats. Cologne’s program is timely, especially in the context of the city's painful history with New Year’s Eve assaults in 2015, which highlighted significant safety issues for women in public spaces.
From a transportation safety perspective, such voucher programs represent a proactive approach to address safety concerns in urban environments. However, to be truly effective, the value of the vouchers should align more closely with actual taxi fare rates. Expanding the number of participating taxi companies and potentially increasing the voucher value would further enhance accessibility and promote a safer travel experience for vulnerable groups. Ensuring comprehensive public awareness about these initiatives is essential to maximizing their usage and effectiveness.
