Class 8 Truck Sales Lose More Ground to Previous Year

Published: March 15, 2025
Class 8 truck sales in the U.S. for February continued to show a decline, reflecting a trend that has persisted for over a year. Sales dropped by 10.7% compared to February 2024, totaling 15,725 units, and also decreased by 2.8% from January. Overall, year-to-date sales are down 11.8% compared to the previous year. Freightliner maintained the largest market share with a 35.4% share, despite a decrease in sales from the prior month. Mack Trucks experienced the most significant growth, contrasting with notable declines from other brands like Volvo, which saw a 40.8% drop. This indicates a continued weakening in the heavy truck market. As a transportation expert, it is crucial to consider the factors driving this decline. Economic conditions, fluctuating demand in the freight sector, and potential inventory adjustments by manufacturers could all be influencing these sales figures. Additionally, a possible increase in fuel prices or shifts in logistics strategies may lead to a more cautious approach from fleets in investing in new vehicles. Understanding these dynamics is essential for stakeholders in the transportation industry to navigate challenges and strategize for recovery.
