Terminal damaged at Yangon International Airport following massive earthquake

Recent footage has highlighted the impact of a powerful 8.2 magnitude earthquake in the Sagaing Region of northwestern Myanmar, particularly at Mandalay Airport. The airport experienced noticeable disturbances during a previous 7.7 magnitude earthquake, prompting flight operations to be temporarily suspended. Passengers were seen waiting on the ground as aftershocks were felt, with footage showing the wings of a Boeing 737 shaking in response to the tremors. There was also structural damage reported, including the ceiling of the main terminal. Operations have since resumed for flights to and from Yangon International Airport.
From a transportation perspective, it is crucial to evaluate the resilience of airport infrastructure in earthquake-prone regions. The capacity of facilities to withstand seismic events directly affects not only passenger safety but also the efficiency of emergency response operations. Continued investment in robust structural engineering and crisis management protocols is essential to minimize disruption and ensure the safety and reliability of aviation services in such vulnerable areas.
