Tokyo Gas Purchases Chevron’s Texas Gas Assets

Published: April 1, 2025
Tokyo Gas Co. and Castleton Commodities International's TG Natural Resources has acquired a 70% stake in Chevron U.S.A. Inc.'s East Texas gas assets for $525 million. This acquisition, disclosed on April 1, reflects Tokyo Gas's ambition to grow its operations in the U.S. amid an environment conducive to increased natural gas exports. Although Tokyo Gas asserts that this investment decision was not influenced by President Trump's policies, the administration is likely to view such foreign investment favorably. Of the total investment, $75 million is allocated for cash payment, while $450 million is designated for the development of Haynesville in Texas. Currently, the shale gas extracted will primarily serve the domestic market, although future plans for liquefied natural gas exports to Japan are under consideration. Tokyo Gas, serving primarily the Tokyo area, also maintains operations in Louisiana. Craig Jarchow, CEO of TGNR, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Chevron, noting potential operational synergies estimated at $170 million due to overlapping assets. With limited domestic energy resources, Japan relies heavily on imports from the U.S. and Australia, making this strategic investment crucial for energy security. This acquisition underscores the growing importance of international partnerships in energy production, especially in regions rich in natural resources like East Texas. As countries like Japan seek to diversify their energy sources, investments by firms like Tokyo Gas can mitigate supply risks while benefiting from developed infrastructure in the U.S. The global energy landscape is rapidly evolving, and such ventures can facilitate more flexible supply chains, enhancing sustainability and energy resilience.
