A Boeing 777-300ER operated by a Taiwanese airline experienced severe turbulence during its inflight meal service, leading to minor injuries among six flight attendants, while passengers remained unharmed. Quick reactions from one passenger prevented a more serious incident, and visuals shared on social media showcased the chaotic aftermath, with meal trays and food scattered in the aisle. The aircraft successfully landed at Taoyuan International Airport after completing its journey from Jakarta.
In a separate incident on August 4, 2024, a Korean Air flight faced severe turbulence shortly after leaving Seoul, resulting in injuries to 14 passengers. The turbulence, which occurred near Tianjin Airport, was exacerbated by lightning and thunder, as reported by passengers who experienced the frightening moments. The flight, carrying 281 people, endured this 15-second ordeal before continuing safely.
Earlier, on June 30, 2024, Air Europa's flight from Madrid to Montevideo experienced a similar situation, injuring up to 30 passengers and necessitating a diversion to Natal, Brazil. Social media footage from this incident highlighted the serious consequences turbulence can have on flights.
Turbulence, while a common occurrence in aviation, can lead to dangerous situations if proper precautions are not taken. Passengers should always be advised to keep their seatbelts fastened when seated, regardless of weather conditions. Airlines are also scrutinized on their measures to inform and protect passengers from the potential effects of turbulence. With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, incorporating advanced meteorological tracking into airline operations could be beneficial in mitigating turbulence-related injuries.
