Hyundai is set to introduce a revamped version of the Ioniq 5 in 2025 for the U.S. market, featuring a rugged trim known as the 'XRT.' This version emphasizes off-road capabilities with enhanced body protection, a lift kit that raises the suspension by 23mm, and boasts improved towing capacity through new front hooks, allowing it to tow over 2.6 tonnes. The SUV will have an 84kWh battery expected to offer a range of 250 to 280 miles, combined with an all-wheel drivetrain. The aesthetic changes include a distinctive look with black 18-inch aluminum wheels, all-terrain tires, and a unique pixel-inspired design theme throughout.
The interior is also getting an upgrade with a redesigned center console and steering wheel, alongside a 12.3-inch infotainment system supporting over-the-air updates and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XRT variant will feature special badges and a few unique interior elements. Pricing is anticipated to begin around $45,000, with the XRT likely exceeding $50,000.
From a transportation perspective, the introduction of the rugged Ioniq 5 XRT highlights the growing trend in the EV market towards vehicles that blend environmental consciousness with practical utility. As manufacturers like Hyundai respond to consumer demand for capable electric vehicles that can handle diverse terrains, this will also push advancements in electric drivetrains and battery technology to enhance performance in such applications. The emergence of off-road EVs is indicative of a broader shift in the automotive industry that seeks to diversify the appeal of electric vehicles beyond urban commuting, promoting more sustainable yet versatile travel options.
