Buttigieg Announces $1 Billion for Transportation Safety
Published: September 8, 2024
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has announced that over $1 billion will be allocated for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, which aims to enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists across the country. This funding comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which is now nearing its third anniversary, and will be distributed to 354 communities to specifically address roadway safety and reduce traffic fatalities, an urgent public concern given that nearly 41,000 highway fatalities were recorded last year.
The SS4A program is designed to support local governments in planning and executing safety projects tailored to their specific needs, both in urban and rural settings. Buttigieg noted the importance of collaboration and bipartisan support in successfully addressing infrastructure challenges, especially as the administration seeks to build upon the progress made over the past two years.
In the transportation sector, enhancing roadway safety is critical not just for protecting users but also for instilling public confidence in transportation systems. As fatalities remain persistently high, effective implementation of safety measures must be prioritized. Furthermore, the integration of advanced mobility technologies and infrastructure improvements can help mitigate risks associated with traditional transportation networks. In looking ahead, it will be essential for Congress to continue discussions on future funding and safety policies that maintain the momentum of the past initiatives while ensuring comprehensive strategies are established to tackle emerging transportation challenges.
