PepsiCo, Maersk, Others Team Up on Electric Truck Pilot
Published: September 17, 2024
A coalition comprising Microsoft, PepsiCo, Maersk, DB Schenker, and AIT Worldwide is leading an initiative to electrify the Interstate 10 trucking corridor, focusing on the construction of charging infrastructure for long-haul battery-electric trucks from Los Angeles to El Paso. This corridor is critical as it connects key transportation hubs, including the nation’s busiest ports and the second-busiest border crossing. Executives from the involved companies emphasize the importance of sustainable logistics as part of their environmental strategies and goals, particularly in achieving carbon neutrality.
TeraWatt Infrastructure is partnering with the coalition to develop six charging hubs along the I-10 corridor. The project has been allocated substantial funding, including a $63.8 million award from the Federal Highway Administration to build two truck charging corridors. This initiative aligns with the U.S. government's National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy and aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for fleet electrification.
The trucking industry is undergoing a pivotal shift towards electrification, which poses significant challenges in infrastructure expansion and energy capacity. The collaboration of major players across various sectors could facilitate the required investment and innovation to make electric trucking a viable and widespread option. The path forward will depend on not only expanding charging capabilities but also ensuring that the electric grid can support increased demand—an aspect that industry leaders are prioritizing. Overall, this coalition represents a promising step toward a sustainable future for freight transportation, leveraging technology and collaborative strategies to transition to cleaner energy solutions.
