Average Diesel Price Declines for 10th Straight Week
Published: September 17, 2024
The U.S. national average diesel price has decreased for ten consecutive weeks, dropping by 2.9 cents to $3.526 per gallon. This marks a total decline of 33.9 cents since early July and represents a significant relief for the trucking sector, as prices are now $1.107 lower than the same week last year. Notably, regions such as the West Coast and Rocky Mountains have experienced the most substantial price drops, with reductions of $1.451 and $1.276, respectively. Other areas have also seen significant decreases in diesel prices, including the Gulf Coast and Midwest, which reported declines of $1.18 and $1.011.
In gasoline markets, the average price for a gallon decreased by 5.6 cents, now standing at $3.18, reflecting a 69.8-cent decrease from the previous year. The Midwest saw the most significant decline, with prices falling by 9.3 cents.
Regional price analyses highlight that while the East Coast experienced reduced prices, the Rocky Mountain area was the only region to see an increase, though it remains lower than last year. In contrast, the Gulf Coast continues to report the lowest diesel prices nationally due to proximity to refineries.
Expert opinion indicates that these declining fuel prices can significantly impact the transportation industry, leading to lower operational costs for trucking companies. This can ultimately result in reduced prices for consumers as transportation costs lower. However, it remains essential for industry stakeholders to stay vigilant, as factors like geopolitical tensions, weather-related disruptions, and domestic policies can cause volatility in fuel prices.
