USDOT Praises Trucking’s Efforts in New Trafficking Report

Published: September 21, 2024
The U.S. Department of Transportation Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking released a comprehensive report that outlines both the challenges and successes in addressing sex and forced labor trafficking in the transportation sector. The report applauds the trucking industry for its proactive efforts to combat these crimes, enhancing partnerships with federal and state government agencies, and remaining vigilant at truck stops and on highways. The transportation sector plays a crucial role in the fight against human trafficking due to its extensive reach in everyday life, which creates opportunities for intervention. It highlights the significance of training transportation workers and travelers to recognize and report suspicious activities. Since the committee’s previous report in 2019, counter-trafficking initiatives among transport stakeholders have markedly increased. Statistics indicate a rise in both prosecutions and reports of potential trafficking cases. In 2023, for instance, there were 30,162 substantive signals reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, identifying numerous potential victims, with some cases linked specifically to truck stops. The report also offers 123 targeted recommendations for various stakeholders, including Congress, law enforcement, and transportation agencies, reflecting a call to action across the board. Commendable initiatives are noted, such as the American Trucking Associations' support for Truckers Against Trafficking, and substantial training efforts by companies such as Werner Enterprises and UPS. An expert perspective on this issue emphasizes the necessity of ongoing education and training within the transportation workforce. Each person in the sector, from administrative staff to drivers, can be instrumental in combating this serious crime. Building strategic partnerships across various sectors, including technology firms and advocacy groups, will be pivotal in ensuring a cohesive approach. The findings of the report underline that while progress is being made, there remains a significant amount of work to be done in terms of awareness and intervention to further safeguard vulnerable individuals from trafficking.
