J.B. Hunt to Test RNG-Fueled Peterbilt 579-X15N Combo
Published: September 23, 2024
J.B. Hunt Transport Services is set to test a 2025 Peterbilt 579 tractor powered by the new Cummins X15N natural gas engine, which operates on renewable natural gas (RNG). This initiative, part of a pilot program spearheaded by alternative fuel supplier Clean Energy Fuels, will also involve other carriers like Ruan, Knight-Swift, and Kenan Advantage Group after J.B. Hunt's initial testing phase. With a substantial fleet already utilizing RNG, J.B. Hunt aims to further reduce its carbon emissions by 32% by 2034, building on its sustained commitment to sustainable practices over 15 years.
J.B. Hunt’s experience, alongside feedback from the test, will provide valuable insights into the capabilities and efficiency of RNG technology in transportation. The new Cummins engine production won’t only expand the potential for reduced emissions but could significantly impact infrastructure demands for fleets transitioning to alternative fuel sources. As the testing moves forward, J.B. Hunt is also exploring diverse fuel options, such as hydrogen and battery-electric trucks, demonstrating a strategic approach to sustainability that avoids dependency on a single solution.
In expert opinion, efforts like this are essential for the evolution of the transportation sector toward a lower carbon footprint. The integration of RNG could serve as a transitional technology while electric and hydrogen options develop further, allowing fleets to leverage existing infrastructure more effectively. However, as J.B. Hunt's CEO highlighted, transitioning to an all-electric fleet will require substantial advancements in charging infrastructure to support the energy demands of these vehicles. The push for increased infrastructure coupled with diverse fuel testing could prove pivotal in meeting sustainability goals across the trucking industry.
