September Class 8 Retail Sales Fall 1.9% Year Over Year
Published: October 11, 2024
In September 2024, U.S. Class 8 truck retail sales continued to decline year-over-year for the second month in a row and the eighth time out of the past nine months. Sales totaled 21,813 trucks, marking a 1.9% decrease from 22,231 units sold in the same month last year. However, there was an upward trend compared to August sales, which increased by 5.5%. Year-to-date figures show a significant drop of 12.3% in total sales, falling from 202,335 to 177,368 units.
Despite the overall decline, four out of seven major Class 8 truck manufacturers reported increased sales compared to September 2023. Western Star, a Daimler Truck North America brand, experienced the largest percentage growth in sales, rising by 45.6% to 1,006 trucks. Other brands like Kenworth and Volvo also saw sales gains of 5.9% and 5.1%, respectively. Freightliner secured the largest market share with 8,137 trucks sold, representing 37.3% of September's total sales. In contrast, Mack Trucks faced the steepest decline, with a 28% drop in sales, followed by International Motors and Peterbilt, which saw decreases of 15.5% and 10.6%.
The mixed results highlight ongoing volatility in the truck sales market. This could reflect various factors, including economic uncertainties, supply chain disruptions, and shifting demand patterns. An expert in transportation might point out that while there are some signs of recovery in specific manufacturers, the overall trend suggests a cautious approach for the industry moving forward. Adapting to market changes and focusing on innovation and efficiency will be essential for manufacturers looking to capitalize on eventual market rebounds, especially as they face increasing competition and regulatory pressures regarding environmental standards.
