An American Airlines Boeing 787 sucked a cargo container into its right engine (video)

On October 17, an American Airlines Boeing 787-9 arriving from London Heathrow experienced an incident at O'Hare International Airport when a cargo container was ingested into its right engine. CCTV footage revealed that the cargo tug, which was responsible for moving the container, crossed the aircraft's path. The jet blast from the plane propelled the container into the engine, resulting in significant damage. Fortunately, the aircraft was able to taxi safely to the gate, and all passengers disembarked without incident. The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the matter, and the aircraft has been grounded for necessary repairs.
In my view, this incident underscores the importance of safety protocols during cargo handling and aircraft movement on airport grounds. The interaction between ground operations and aircraft needs to be meticulously coordinated to prevent such accidents. Enhanced training for ground staff, tighter operational procedures, and better communication systems may help in avoiding future occurrences. Automation and advanced sensor technologies may also provide further safeguards to prevent ground vehicles from entering critical pathways during aircraft movements.
