Jet2 gets rid of a 32-year-old Boeing 757

Published: November 8, 2024
Jet2 Airlines has initiated the process of retiring its fleet of Boeing 757-200 aircraft, having previously operated a total of eight of these models. The retirement plan includes the phased exit of these aircraft, with G-LSAD already out of service since 2020, and G-LSAB scheduled to leave in 2024. Recently, the 32-year-old Boeing 757, G-LSAC, made its final commercial flight from Fuerteventura to Manchester before being sent to storage at St Athan. The airline aims to complete the retirement of all Boeing 757-200s by January 2025. Notably, the oldest plane in the fleet, G-LSAI, which is 37 years old, remains active at the Manchester base. Retiring older aircraft models like the Boeing 757-200 reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry towards fleet modernization, enhancing efficiency and sustainability. Newer aircraft typically offer improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and better passenger comfort, which aligns with the industry's goals for environmental stewardship. Airlines must balance the costs and benefits of maintaining older fleets against the investment required for new aircraft, especially as regulatory pressures for greener operations increase.
