Toyota has unveiled a concept based on the GR86, designed as a tribute to the iconic Celica GT-Four rally car from the 1990s. This unique vehicle features a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine derived from the US GR Corolla, producing 300bhp and 273lb ft of torque. Unlike the typical flat-four engine in the GR86, this concept includes a performance intercooler and a race-oriented ECU. Additionally, it has adopted an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system from the GR Corolla, significantly altering the chassis with a custom front subframe, modified suspension components, and an upgraded rear axle to accommodate the AWD setup. To enhance its rally-ready characteristics, Toyota has incorporated custom coilovers, a full roll cage, racing harnesses, and visual features that pay homage to its rally heritage, such as spotlights and a rear wing. Toyota USA's motorsports GM emphasized the intention behind the concept was to evoke nostalgia for the legendary rally car, merging past glory with modern engineering. The suggestion of a limited production run has been floated, indicating potential interest from enthusiasts eager to connect with the automotive legacy. From an expert perspective in transportation, this concept reflects a growing trend among manufacturers to blend historical homage with contemporary performance. As vehicles increasingly cater to niche markets and enthusiast communities, offering limited runs of such cars can create unique consumer engagement opportunities. It not only revives interest in classic performance vehicles but also showcases how advancements in technology can provide new life to legendary designs.
