NMFTA’s LTL Freight Classification Updates Coming July 2025
Published: November 29, 2024
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has announced the rescheduled launch date of its improved less-than-truckload (LTL) freight classification system, now set for July 19, 2025. This delay from the previously planned May rollout will impact all users of the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC). The revamped system will be integrated with ClassIT+, a new digital platform that features a modern application programming interface. One of the primary goals of these updates is to enhance the accuracy of freight classification, thereby avoiding unnecessary costs associated with incorrect classifying, which can inflate overall shipping expenses.
According to Joe Ohr, NMFTA's COO, the updates aim to simplify the process for shippers, carriers, and third-party logistics providers while improving transparency and user experience. The NMFTA has engaged industry stakeholders through public meetings and listening sessions to gather feedback on the proposed changes. Furthermore, the association continues to focus on maintaining digital standards and cybersecurity within the LTL industry.
From a transportation perspective, improving the accuracy of freight classification is crucial. The transition to a more user-friendly and efficient digital platform will likely streamline operations and reduce disputes over shipping classifications. As the logistics landscape becomes increasingly complex, such advancements not only enhance operational efficiency but also serve to minimize costs and improve service delivery across the supply chain. This initiative by NMFTA is a necessary evolution to support the growing demands of the freight industry, paving the way for smarter logistics practices.
