Aurora Opens Lidar Testing Facility in Montana

Aurora Innovation has established a 78,000-square-foot office and testing facility in Bozeman, Montana, on December 12. Situated within Montana State University's Innovation Campus, this facility will be instrumental in the development and testing of Aurora's FirstLight Lidar technology, which enhances the capabilities of autonomous trucking. The facility features labs for research and development, a clean room for manufacturing, vehicle testing garages, and collaborative office space.
In 2019, Aurora acquired Blackmore, a lidar specialist based in Bozeman, and has since utilized its technology to create the FirstLight Lidar system, capable of detecting objects at distances exceeding 450 meters. CEO Chris Urmson highlighted the significance of Montana's resources in advancing safe autonomous driving technology. The facility's opening coincided with the announcement of commercial operations for the Volvo Autonomous Solutions' VNL Autonomous tractor.
Aurora is currently engaged in supervised autonomous freight runs for DHL in Texas while preparing for a significant launch of fully autonomous trips in April 2025, targeting commercial operations without human operators in the vehicles. The company anticipates expanding operations substantially by the latter half of 2025, adding more vehicles and routes.
