FMCSA Panel Calls for Solutions to Truck Parking Crisis

A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration advisory committee recently convened to assess best practices for improving safe parking options for truck drivers seeking rest. Despite a lengthy discussion, the committee found it challenging to pinpoint effective solutions beyond simply increasing funding for additional parking spaces, leading them to conclude that further meetings would be necessary to include input from state officials, trade groups, and the private sector. The committee emphasized the significance of safe truck parking for road safety and recognized the need for flexibility in response to drivers' diverse routes and working conditions.
Members highlighted specific issues, particularly along busy corridors like I-95, where parking shortages are critical. They suggested establishing long-term strategies that include safety measures, such as improved lighting at parking areas that cater to female drivers, and utilizing existing infrastructure like weigh stations for truck parking. Additionally, they advocated for a "heat map" showing areas with the most commercial vehicle traffic to better target solutions. The committee also pondered strategies to encourage truck drivers to wear seat belts, highlighting that a significant number of fatalities result from not doing so.
