Road to a European future: Bosnia and Herzegovina speeds up highway construction

Published: January 12, 2025
Bosnia and Herzegovina is undertaking a significant infrastructure project known as transport corridor Vc, which connects the Croatian port of Ploče to Sarajevo. This 336-kilometre highway aims to enhance regional connectivity and better integrate Bosnia into European markets. Although the project has faced delays since its inception 23 years ago, construction is currently accelerating, with substantial funds from the European Union and other financial institutions supporting its development. The highway is expected to stimulate economic growth by facilitating the establishment of industrial parks along the route, creating jobs, and improving transportation efficiency for local businesses. However, many companies, like NCMC, report frustration with the existing poor transport links, which hinder their operations despite a growing workforce demand. The outdated railway infrastructure complicates freight transport, as businesses rely heavily on road transport for exports. The project has implications for Bosnia's aspirations to join the EU, with European stakeholders expressing that investment in the region is aimed at fostering integration into the European market. Yet, concerns persist regarding the management of EU funds amid local governance challenges. In my expert opinion, the successful completion of transport corridor Vc is crucial not only for Bosnia's economy but also for regional stability and connections within the Western Balkans. Effective transportation infrastructure can drive industrial growth, reduce unemployment, and ultimately lay the groundwork for Bosnia's future integration into the EU. However, political unity and strong governance will be essential in overcoming barriers and ensuring that this investment brings the intended benefits without succumbing to corruption or inefficiency.
