Farewell, V8: Lexus is killing off the RC F at the end of 2025

Published: January 19, 2025
Lexus has announced the discontinuation of the RC model line after a decade of production, including the high-performance V8 RC F. The final models, known as the 'Final Edition,' will be available globally starting November 2023, marking the end of the naturally aspirated V8 generation. Over its lifetime, around 79,000 RC units were sold, with 12,000 RC Fs sold, which was positioned as a competitor to the more powerful BMW M3 but never quite matched it. The Final Edition features enhancements such as a carbon package, active rear wing, and retains the powerful 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 479bhp. The interior maintains its upscale elements, with options for customized finishes and a commemorative plaque. In contrast to the V8 variant, the standard RC will continue with two powertrain options, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and a V6, offering various configurations and drivetrain choices. From a transportation perspective, the discontinuation of the RC line reflects a broader industry trend toward downsizing engines and shifting focus to electrification. As manufacturers adapt to changing consumer preferences and regulatory pressures, models like the RC F may become rare collectibles, further intensifying interest in their performance heritage. The move away from naturally aspirated engines points to an inevitable transition where enthusiasts may seek out older models for their driving dynamics, as future vehicles will increasingly rely on hybrid or fully electric systems. This could enhance the classic car market in the long run, as models like the RC F become more sought after for their distinct character.
