Chevron Cuts Buybacks and Exxon Sits Tight as Oil Plunges

Published: May 2, 2025
Chevron Corp. has announced a reduction in its share buybacks for the second quarter, lowering the repurchase amount to approximately $2.75 billion, which is a 30% decrease from the first quarter. This decision comes despite Chevron exceeding earnings expectations due to increased low-cost production from regions like Kazakhstan and the Permian Basin. The decline in oil prices, largely attributed to geopolitical factors including President Trump’s trade policies, is making it challenging for major oil companies to maintain their previous levels of shareholder rewards.

While companies like Exxon Mobil and Shell continue with their planned buybacks, Chevron’s situation indicates a cautious approach amid fluctuating market conditions. Brent crude oil prices have slumped about 17% this year, raising concerns about demand and costs, especially considering recent OPEC strategies to boost supply. Analysts are watching closely, as Chevron’s adjusted earnings were healthy but reflect an overall industry trend of rising debt.

Chevron's debt ratio increased from 10.4% to 14.4%, albeit still below its target range. The company’s CFO suggested that this lower buyback strategy is a proactive measure, reflecting anticipation of potential further market deterioration. Comparatively, Exxon has chosen to continue investing significantly in new projects, positioning itself to emerge stronger once the market stabilizes.

In transportation, fluctuations in oil prices have direct implications for logistics and supply chains, influencing fuel costs and transportation efficiency. A sustained dip in oil prices might benefit logistics companies through lower operational costs but could also lead to reduced investments in infrastructure and technology as firms scale back on capital expenditures. The overall health of the oil and gas sector is integral to transport dynamics, making these corporate decisions crucial for industry forecasting and planning.
