China-US Trade Soars in Race to Hit Trade Truce Window

Published: May 21, 2025
The recent temporary trade truce between the U.S. and China has led to a significant increase in shipping activity from China to the U.S. Beginning on May 12, bookings surged to over 228,000 TEUs, more than double the previous week's figures. Shipping costs also rose sharply, with spot rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles increasing by around 16%. This uptick in activity is indicative of front-loading as suppliers rush to ship goods before potential tariffs re-emerge. Alongside maritime traffic, air cargo flights from China also rose nearly 18%.

Experts, such as Jayendu Krishna from Drewry Maritime Services, suggest that this surge could create supply chain disruptions over the next few months unless further tariff changes occur. Many factories are ramping up production to meet the influx of orders, particularly in preparation for the holiday season. Notably, major manufacturers like A.P. Moller-Maersk are expanding capacity in response to this boom.

However, even with these spikes in activity, the overall shipping volumes align with figures from the same period last year, reflecting cautious ordering behaviors among retailers as they remain uncertain about the future of trade relations. Countries like South Korea and Japan are experiencing declines in exports, indicating broader regional impacts.

In transportation, the ripple effects of such trade discussions are profound. While increasing cargo demand provides immediate opportunities, it can strain logistics systems, highlighting the need for robust contingency planning. Shippers and logistics providers should be prepared for potential volatility as economic climates shift, and they may need to adapt strategies for capacity management to maintain service levels effectively.
