Class 8 Truck Orders Fall 52% During April

Published: May 8, 2025
North American Class 8 truck orders have seen a significant decline, with a 52.1% drop year-over-year to 7,600 units in April, down from 15,850 units the previous year. This downward trend continues sequentially, with a 53.9% decrease compared to March. The market is characterized by increased uncertainty, impacted by recent U.S. economic policy changes and the introduction of reciprocal tariffs in early April. Ken Vieth of ACT Research noted that the current order levels are the lowest since the pandemic began.

Furthermore, medium-duty truck orders (Classes 5-7) have also decreased by 41% compared to last year, with 11,600 units reported. Industry executives suggest that the ongoing uncertainty regarding pricing, tariffs, and production lead times has led to customers delaying new truck orders.

Dan Moyer from FTR highlights that pending tariffs will further escalate costs for Class 8 trucks and related components, which could dampen demand as economic growth slows. This situation is compounded by potential changes to truck emissions regulations expected in 2027, adding to the complexity of the market.

From an expert perspective in transportation, this decline in orders may signal a crucial turning point for the industry. The combination of regulatory uncertainties and tariff-induced cost increases could reshape not only the market but also the strategies of manufacturers and fleets in terms of investment and operational planning. The possibility of decreased investment in new trucks could lead to a longer-term challenge in maintaining fleet modernity, which is vital for efficiency and compliance with future regulations. The industry may need to brace for a strategic shift in how it approaches procurement and fleet management amid these uncertainties.
