DHL Flies 17 Endangered Mountain Bongo Antelopes to Kenya
DHL Express has successfully transported 17 endangered mountain bongo antelopes from Florida to a conservation sanctuary on the slopes of Mount Kenya. This initiative was part of a collaboration with Tusk, an African conservation charity, and aimed to support the critically endangered species, which numbers fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild due to poaching and habitat loss.
Transporting the bongos involved complex logistics, with the animals being housed in custom-built crates and accompanied by specialists, as well as provisions for their care during the flight. The journey covered 7,146 nautical miles from Palm Beach International Airport to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya.
Upon arrival, the bongos were released into a 20-acre sanctuary managed by the Kenya Forest Service. This sanctuary is crucial for the species’ recovery plan, providing a safe habitat where they can breed and potentially be reintroduced into their native ecosystem.
