Diesel Price Dips 1.7¢ to $3.497 a Gallon

Published: May 6, 2025
The national average diesel price decreased slightly by 1.7 cents to $3.497 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This decline marks a total drop of 14.2 cents over four consecutive weeks after a previous increase of 9 cents over three weeks. Compared to a year ago, the current diesel price is 39.7 cents lower.

Regionally, diesel prices have fallen across all five PADD districts, with the Midwest seeing the most significant drop of 2.4 cents, and the West Coast, excluding California, reporting a 2.7-cent decrease. In contrast, the national average gasoline price rose by 1.4 cents to $3.147, remaining 49.6 cents lower than the same time last year.

From a transportation expert's perspective, the decrease in diesel prices is positive news for the trucking industry, as fuel costs are a significant operational expense. Lower diesel prices can help stabilize freight rates and may lead to reduced costs for consumers over time. However, the short-term fluctuations highlight the industry's vulnerability to market volatility, emphasizing the importance of strategic fuel management and potential investment in alternative fuel technologies to mitigate future risks.
