Diesel Price Increases 6¢ to Settle at $3.536

Published: May 20, 2025
The national average price of diesel has increased for the first time since early April, rising by 6 cents to $3.536 per gallon, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on May 20. Prior to this increase, diesel prices had consistently fallen since April 14, totaling a drop of 16.9 cents. Currently, diesel is priced 25.3 cents lower than it was at this time in 2024.

In terms of regional trends, every PADD district showed an increase in diesel prices, with the West Coast experiencing the largest hike of 8.5 cents. The highest increase within subregions occurred in the West Coast less California area, where prices rose by 9.3 cents; the Central Atlantic saw the smallest rise at 1.1 cents. Meanwhile, gasoline prices also increased by 5.3 cents, averaging $3.173, but remain significantly lower than in the previous year by 41.1 cents.

From a transportation perspective, fluctuations in diesel prices are crucial for freight costs, which can impact overall supply chain expenses. An increase in diesel costs can lead to higher shipping rates, affecting consumer prices. Given that trucking remains a primary method for transporting goods in the U.S., monitoring these price changes is essential for logistics planning and cost forecasting in the industry.
