Diesel Price Sheds 4.9¢ to $3.487 a Gallon

Published: May 28, 2025
The national average price of diesel fuel has decreased by 4.9 cents, now sitting at $3.487 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This change reverses a previous increase of 6 cents noted in the week of May 19, which interrupted a series of five consecutive price drops amounting to 16.3 cents. Comparatively, diesel prices are 27.1 cents lower than they were at the same time in 2024. Across the different Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts (PADDs), prices fell in all regions except for the Central Atlantic, which saw a slight increase of 1.3 cents. In terms of gasoline, the national average price has also declined by 1.3 cents to $3.160 per gallon, reflecting a year-over-year decrease of 41.7 cents.

From a transportation perspective, fluctuations in diesel prices directly influence the trucking industry's operational costs. Lower diesel prices can provide immediate relief for trucking companies, potentially leading to reduced freight rates or increased profit margins. However, the persistence of volatility in fuel prices underscores the need for trucking companies to adopt fuel management strategies, including investing in more fuel-efficient technologies and optimizing route planning to mitigate the impact of future price changes.
