Europe Car Bosses Tout EVs, Warn Against Combustion-Engine Ban

Published: September 10, 2025
At the Munich auto show, top European car executives are promoting their new electric vehicles while simultaneously urging the European Union to revise its plan for phasing out combustion-engine vehicles by 2035. Executives from companies like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis have voiced concerns about the feasibility of selling only electric vehicles by that timeline due to various challenges, including a stagnant car market, inconsistent EV demand, and strong competition from Chinese automakers like BYD.

Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume criticized the 2035 target as unrealistic, advocating for a more pragmatic approach that accommodates multiple technologies. This comes as various stakeholders prepare for a crucial meeting with EU leadership, where automakers will express their concerns and call for flexibility in regulations to avoid disruption in supply chains vital to European economies.

Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for action and a reassessment of existing policies to better enable the transition to electric mobility. Automakers are pushing for the continued use of hybrids and range-extender technologies, along with consistent purchase incentives for EVs. They argue that these adjustments are necessary to allow consumers and suppliers more time to transition while remaining competitive against global rivals.

On the regulatory side, EU officials warn that weakening the 2035 mandate could undermine climate goals and investor confidence, ultimately hindering clean technology investments and increasing reliance on fossil fuels. As the EU debates its 2040 emissions reduction targets, tensions between industry needs and environmental commitments are poised to shape future automotive policies significantly.

In my expert opinion, the transportation sector must balance innovation and environmental responsibility. While the goals of transitioning to electric vehicles are laudable, practical considerations, such as consumer adoption rates and supply chain transitions, must also be taken into account. Implementing a phased approach that encourages technological diversity could ultimately prove beneficial in achieving both industry viability and environmental sustainability.
