Hyundai Says Battery Plant Delayed After Immigration Raid

Published: September 11, 2025
The construction of a Georgia battery plant, developed by Hyundai Motor Co. in partnership with LG Energy Solution Ltd., is facing delays due to worker shortages following a recent immigration raid. CEO José Muñoz indicated that the project could be delayed by two to three months as efforts to repatriate detained workers are underway, with a chartered flight scheduled to transport them back to South Korea. The raid saw the detention of 475 workers, mostly South Korean, leading to not only labor shortages but also heightened tensions between the U.S. and South Korea, as many Korean employees are now hesitant to take on assignments in America.

LG has stated its commitment to continue investing in U.S. projects, despite the disruptions. However, the ramifications of the raid may extend further, potentially jeopardizing billions of dollars in future South Korean investments in the U.S. and affecting various LG Energy Solution sites across the country.

In the realm of transportation, the implications of this situation go beyond immediate delays. Such disruptions in labor supply can increase construction costs and timelines, affecting supply chains crucial for the automotive and battery industries. Moreover, the uncertainty surrounding labor availability may deter foreign investment and hinder the progress of clean energy initiatives, which are vital for achieving transportation sustainability goals.
