JBS Sees Bigger Beef Toll on Profit Amid Cattle Shortage

Published: August 17, 2025
JBS NV is experiencing significant profit challenges due to the smallest U.S. cattle herd in decades. The company reported a 12% decrease in adjusted earnings, netting $1.2 billion in the second quarter, alongside a substantial $293 million loss in its North American beef segment, which marks a drastic increase in losses from the previous year. The cattle shortage has led to record-high prices for slaughter-weight animals, impacting profitability for several large meat producers.

Despite these challenges, JBS is showing resilience in other areas. Their chicken division, Pilgrim's Pride Corp., achieved record earnings as consumers shift to more affordable poultry options. Additionally, JBS plans a $200 million investment to modernize its beef processing facilities and is expanding its portfolio to include higher-margin, added-value products, such as ready-to-eat items.

Financially, the company is navigating through liquidity issues, having reported a cash burn of $55 million this quarter compared to a previous generation of $1.1 billion in free cash. JBS's initiative to repurchase $400 million worth of stock and recent uptick in share prices reflect a strategic attempt to bolster investor confidence amid turbulent market conditions.

From a transportation perspective, JBS’s position within the logistics framework for meat supply highlights the importance of efficient supply chain management in the face of cattle shortages and fluctuating prices. This could be an opportune moment for JBS to enhance its logistics and distribution networks to mitigate delays and maximize efficiency, ensuring that supply closely meets evolving consumer demands. Investing in transportation optimization can further improve cost management and product reach, which is crucial for sustaining operations during periods of supply strain.
