Kenworth has introduced the TX-12 PRO automated transmission and MX-13 engine combination to its T680, T880, and W990 models. This transmission was previously exclusive to vocational versions of the T680 and T880 featuring PX-9 and MX-11 engines. The T680 can support various engine options, including PX-9, MX-11, MX-13, and automated transmissions such as TX-12, TX-12 PRO, TX-18, and TX-18 PRO. The T880 has similar engine and transmission options, while the W990 comes equipped with the MX-13 engine and multiple transmission choices.

The TX-12 PRO is designed to handle high torque rates and is beneficial for vocational trucks, featuring enhancements for low-speed handling and off-road capabilities. Kenworth's integration of this combination aims to cater to customers in vocational applications, according to Kevin Haygood, the assistant general manager for sales and marketing.

As part of its ongoing product strategy, Kenworth has revamped its T680 battery-electric configuration and introduced the T880E, its first Class 8 battery-electric vocational truck. The redesigned T680E features an in-house developed powertrain capable of delivering between 365 and 470 horsepower.

However, Kenworth will discontinue the production of its legacy W900, T800W, and C500 models by 2026. Meanwhile, the company is also facing delays in the rollout of its hydrogen fuel cell electric T680 trucks due to ongoing calibration and infrastructure considerations.

In transportation and automotive sectors, the shift toward integrated powertrains and electric vehicles reflects the industry's larger trend towards fuel efficiency and sustainability. The transition to electric and alternative fuel vehicles is essential for reducing emissions and aligning with evolving regulations and market expectations. Kenworth has been making significant updates to its product lineup, including the discontinuation of several legacy models, notably the W900, a classic truck that has been in production since 1963. This model, along with the T800W and C500, will cease production in 2026, with the final orders due in late 2025. In contrast, the company recently introduced new models like the T680E and T880E, reflecting an ongoing shift towards electric and hydrogen fuel cell technology.

However, Kenworth faced a delay in the expected production of the hydrogen fuel cell electric T680, which was previously set to start in 2025. Chief Engineer Joe Adams mentioned they are conducting further evaluations to ensure the tractor's profitability and that the necessary refueling infrastructure is established. The redesigned T680E offers a significant powertrain upgrade, developed in-house, showcasing continuous power ranging from 365 to 470 hp and peak performance of 605 hp.

The retirement of iconic models and the cautious approach towards hydrogen technology signal a major transition in the industry as manufacturers like Kenworth adjust to evolving market dynamics and demand for clean energy vehicles.
