Medium-Duty Truck Sales Drop 17% in July

Published: August 20, 2025
U.S. medium-duty truck sales saw a significant decline of 17.3% year over year in July, with retail sales in Classes 4-7 dropping from 20,792 to 17,204 units. Sales trends have mostly been below last year's levels since May 2024, and there was a sequential dip of 3.3% from June’s figures. ACT Research Vice President Steve Tam commented that lease rental fleets are experiencing irregular trade cycles and that the Class 7 market is normalizing after a sluggish year for equipment replacements. While there isn't a clear indication that demand is rising, firms are leveraging the current market to upgrade older vehicles.

Tam also pointed out that backlogs for medium-duty trucks have returned to historical levels, allowing manufacturers to recover after the disruptions of the pandemic. He noted that a year ago, medium-duty backlogs were over twice the historical average due to delays in delivery pipelines. Staffing challenges persist for upfitters, who have been hesitant to hire more workers, given the uncertain demand forecast.

In terms of class-specific sales, Class 7 trucks rose slightly by 6.9%, while Classes 4, 5, and 6 experienced declines ranging from 16.5% to 30.3%. Key players in the market included Freightliner, Ford, and Isuzu, which led in sales for their respective classes.

Expert opinion: The current slowdown in medium-duty truck sales underscores a critical juncture in the transportation sector. As fleets aim to modernize their operations while grappling with workforce constraints, the rise of technologies such as autonomous trucks may provide a viable solution. As freight demand continues to evolve, the integration of self-driving technologies could not only enhance efficiency but also help mitigate the labor shortages faced by the industry. Manufacturers and operators who adapt by investing in innovation rather than solely focusing on traditional staffing solutions may better position themselves for future growth.
