Medium-Duty Truck Sales Fall for 9th Time in 12 Months

Published: June 17, 2025
U.S. medium-duty truck sales have declined for the ninth time in the last twelve months, with a 9% drop in May compared to last year, totaling 18,532 units. This decline follows a slight sequential decrease from April's figures. According to ACT Research's Vice President Steve Tam, the medium-duty market is more consumer-centric, which complicates the buying process. Many of the buyers are perceived as less financially sophisticated and might not be aware of the significant increases in used truck prices, potentially discouraging them from making purchases.

Tam has observed a general slow down in demand from both consumers and manufacturers, as the uncertainty surrounding pricing and tariffs complicates order acceptance. Sales numbers highlight that while Class 6 truck sales increased slightly, Classes 4 and 5 saw significant decreases, and Class 7 experienced a stark drop. Major brands such as Freightliner, Ford, and Isuzu led sales in their respective classes.

From a transportation perspective, the slow demand in the medium-duty segment is concerning. It suggests a potential cooling in the market that can have broader implications for supply chain dynamics, affecting everything from logistics to fleet management. Manufacturers may need to reassess their market strategies to engage consumers effectively and adapt to evolving market conditions. Stronger communication about price trends and product value could encourage buyers who are currently hesitant.
