NHTSA Investigates Tesla Over Delayed Crash Reporting

Published: August 24, 2025
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Tesla due to significant delays in reporting crash data associated with its driver-assistance technology. Reports from Tesla were found to be filed “several months or more” after the incidents occurred, which is a violation of NHTSA regulations requiring companies to submit reports within one to five days of being notified of a crash. Tesla attributed the delays to a problem with its data collection, which they claim has been resolved. In response to the situation, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has initiated an audit to determine the reasons behind these late reports and to implement strategies to prevent such issues in the future.

In the field of transportation, timely reporting of crash data is critical for ensuring public safety and fostering trust in automated vehicle technologies. Delays in reporting can hinder effective oversight and analysis, which is essential for improving vehicle safety features and regulations. It’s important for manufacturers like Tesla to prioritize robust data collection and reporting processes, not just to comply with regulations but to enhance the credibility of their autonomous systems. Ensuring reliability in reporting incidents helps to maintain consumer confidence and can lead to better safety innovations in the long run.
