Polestar Unveils China-Built Electric Sedan to Battle Porsche

Published: September 9, 2025
Polestar Automotive Holding UK has introduced the Polestar 5 luxury sedan at the Munich auto show, aiming to compete with high-end models such as the Porsche Panamera. This grand tourer is set to start at 119,900 euros and features an aluminum platform developed by Polestar in the U.K., while its production will take place in China. The vehicle's performance includes a charge range of up to 670 kilometers and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under four seconds. Following recent financial challenges, including a significant write-down on the Polestar 3 SUV, CEO Michael Lohscheller is under pressure to revitalize the brand, focusing on a traditional dealership model and a primary market in Europe and North America.

In the context of the evolving luxury electric vehicle market, the introduction of the Polestar 5 underscores a strategic move by Polestar to establish itself firmly against established competitors in the high-performance electric segment. The emphasis on engineering within the UK adds an element of brand identity while leveraging lower production costs in China. This dual approach might facilitate competitive pricing while maintaining quality standards. As we see increased competition in the luxury EV space, the success of the Polestar 5 will likely depend on the brand's ability to enhance its dealer network and customer engagement while simplifying the purchasing process amidst ongoing regulatory uncertainties.
