Torc Invests $5.6M to Create Engineering Hub in Michigan

Published: June 24, 2025
Torc Robotics is planning to invest approximately $5.6 million to establish an engineering hub in Ann Arbor Township, Michigan. The company, a part of Daimler Truck AG and focused on self-driving software for long-haul trucks, received a $3 million grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund to support the development of this center. The facility will primarily focus on engineering, design, and development of Torc's software for autonomous trucking, with product testing conducted at its Texas location. The initiative is expected to generate around 500 high-paying technology jobs, with average salaries for engineers reaching approximately $177,000 annually. Torc is also relocating jobs from Germany as it closes its European facility.

From a transportation perspective, the establishment of such a center in Michigan highlights a significant shift towards automation in freight transport. The move not only reaffirms Michigan's historical role as a hub for automotive innovation but also could enhance local economies through high-skill job creation. As autonomous freight technology continues to evolve, investments like Torc's will be crucial in advancing the industry's capabilities and addressing future transportation challenges, such as driver shortages and safety enhancements. The focus on job creation in this sector may attract a skilled workforce and drive further advancements in self-driving technology.
