Tractor Makers Warn That Tariffs Will Raise Machinery Prices

Published: August 3, 2025
Farmers will face higher prices for agricultural machinery due to President Donald Trump's tariffs, according to AGCO Corp. and CNH Industrial NV. As tariffs rise, equipment manufacturers will have to increase costs for both U.S. and international farmers. AGCO, which produces high-end Fendt tractors in Europe, is adapting its pricing strategy to distribute these costs across its range of products. The company's CEO, Eric Hansotia, emphasized the need to manage rising expenses globally.

The situation is fluid, with recent adjustments pointing to potential minimum tariffs of 10%. Companies must navigate complex financial scenarios to maintain profitability, leading AGCO to forecast only a modest price increase of 1% in 2025, which could change based on market dynamics. CNH has also raised its prices for model year 2026 machines, though the exact amounts are undisclosed, with increasing domestic costs for steel and aluminum contributing to these changes.

This price increase comes at a challenging time for farmers, who are already dealing with declining crop values and increased loan delinquencies in Brazil, as noted by CNH's CFO James Nickolas. He remarked on the cyclical difficulties facing Brazilian farmers, underscoring the broader economic stressors in the agricultural sector.

From a transportation perspective, these tariffs not only impact equipment costs but could also lead to logistical challenges. Higher machinery prices can limit farmers' purchasing power, potentially affecting their ability to invest in newer technology that might improve efficiency and sustainability. The ripple effects of these tariff policies could extend into supply chains, altering transportation demand patterns and efficiency priorities within the agricultural sector.
