Vocational Demand, Price Hikes Boost Allison Q1 Profit

Published: May 6, 2025
Allison Transmission reported a strong performance in the first quarter of 2025, with net income increasing to $192 million, up 13.6% from the previous year. The company benefited from increased demand for Class 8 vocational trucks and day cab tractors, expected to grow thanks to a rise in infrastructure spending. CEO David Graziosi noted that the market remains relatively stable despite economic uncertainties, particularly since 30% to 40% of their business comes from municipal customers, which are less affected by fluctuations in the economy.

However, demand in the regional haul segment has been weaker, with forecasts indicating softness in that market. Despite this, Allison is focused on maintaining market share in the regional sector. The company also experienced higher sales in the North American on-highway market, which generated $435 million in revenue.

Analysts expect Allison to continue performing well, as highlighted by Rob Wertheimer from Melius Research, who noted that the company is now benefiting from better pricing after a long-term contract cycle. He mentioned that the vocational truck market is less volatile compared to other sectors of trucking, providing a more stable business environment.

In transportation, this highlights a key insight: markets tied to municipal demand tend to be more resilient during economic downturns, which is crucial for companies like Allison that focus on vocational markets. This adaptability could be essential as the industry navigates ongoing supply chain challenges and shifting regulatory landscapes.
