Japan Leads the Way in Advanced RoRo Fire Detection

Jan 28, 20261 min readMarineLink News

A recent inspection by global vessel condition specialist Idwal reveals that Japan is emerging as an early adopter of advanced fire detection systems on Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessels. While adoption of these systems remains uneven across the global fleet, Japanese-owned and operated tonnage is increasingly installing more advanced detection technology ahead of regulatory requirements.

This trend is driven by the growing presence of electric vehicles in cargo mixes, which poses a unique fire risk. However, retrofitting advanced systems on older vessels remains challenging due to commercial considerations.

Newbuilds and Japanese-owned or operated vessels are most commonly equipped with advanced detection systems, including camera-based systems designed to identify abnormal heat signatures. Despite this progress, these vessels still represent a small proportion of the global RoRo fleet.

Investment in safety technology is influenced by regulatory certainty, and the lack of a consistent approach to fighting electric vehicle fires at sea continues to shape decision-making. Firefighting strategies remain fragmented, leading owners to question the value of installing advanced detection systems without clear response or compliance requirements.

The industry is moving towards more advanced fire detection technologies, but there are still challenges to overcome before these systems can be fully integrated into fleet operations.

EazyInWay Expert Take

The adoption of advanced RoRo fire detection technology is a critical step in mitigating the unique fire risks posed by electric vehicles on cargo ships. As the industry continues to evolve, it's essential that regulatory frameworks and firefighting strategies keep pace with technological advancements.
