Raising Driving Standards: A Shift in Attitude Behind the Wheel

Raising Driving Standards: A Shift in Attitude Behind the Wheel
The road test failure rate has seen a significant increase over the past decade, with more people failing their driver's test than ever before. In Massachusetts, this trend is particularly pronounced, with the failure rate jumping from 28% to 42% between 2020 and 2025. This alarming rise in failures suggests that something fundamental is amiss when it comes to teaching new drivers how to navigate the roads. The American Automobile Association believes that changing test-taker demographics are to blame for this uptick in failures. With fewer teenagers attempting to get a driver's license, those who do take the road test are far less likely to have received the necessary training and experience. This is because Massachusetts requires any license applicant under 18 to complete a driver's ed course that includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and 18 hours of on-road instruction. However, once someone turns 18, this requirement disappears, creating an incentive for applicants to simply wait and take the road test less prepared. This logic is straightforward: without the structured learning and practice that comes with a driver's ed course, new drivers are left to rely solely on their own experience and intuition when behind the wheel. As AAA spokesperson Mark Schieldrop notes, 'They're lacking the classroom experience, learning the rules of the road, and then they're not getting practice hours in.' This lack of preparation can have disastrous consequences, making it more likely that new drivers will fail their test or worse, cause an accident on the roads. However, this state of affairs might not last forever. States are taking action to raise driving standards by raising the age at which driver's ed is required for a license. Ohio lawmakers passed a state budget bill last year that required anyone under 21 to take a driver's education course to apply for a license. This move aims to ensure that all new drivers receive the necessary training and experience before taking to the roads. The impact of this shift in policy could be significant, particularly in states where access to driver's ed is limited or non-existent. For example, Minnesota is debating whether to raise its age requirement, joining Ohio, Washington, Maryland, and Texas in their efforts to improve driving standards. Andrew Myers, the bill's author, argues that his goal is to 'forward meaningful options that increase safety on our roads.' By requiring all new drivers to complete a driver's ed course, these states hope to reduce the number of accidents caused by inexperienced or poorly trained drivers. However, there are concerns that an existing lack of access to driver's ed might worsen with the influx of students. The bill initially included subsidies to support expansion, but they were dropped, leaving many schools and community organizations struggling to provide the necessary resources. This could disproportionately affect marginalized communities, who may already face barriers in accessing education and other essential services. Despite these challenges, the benefits of raising driving standards cannot be overstated. By ensuring that all new drivers receive the necessary training and experience, states can significantly reduce the number of accidents caused by inexperienced or poorly trained drivers. This, in turn, can lead to safer roads and a reduced risk of injury or death for all road users. The debate over driver's ed is far from over, and it will be interesting to see how this issue plays out in the coming months and years. As the number of road test failures continues to rise, it's clear that a shift in attitude behind the wheel is needed to ensure safer roads. By prioritizing education and training, states can help to create a more responsible and safe driving culture. In conclusion, the rise in road test failures has sparked a necessary conversation about the importance of driver's ed. As we move forward, it will be crucial to address the challenges and obstacles that stand in the way of providing access to this critical training for all new drivers.

Rivian R2 And Jeep Recon: A Tale of Two Electric SUVs
Electric vehicles have been gaining traction in recent years, with many manufacturers investing heavily in their development. Two such models that have caught the attention of car enthusiasts are the Rivian R2 and the Jeep Recon. Both SUVs share a common goal - to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. However, they differ significantly in terms of design, features, and pricing. The Rivian R2 is positioned as a luxury electric SUV with advanced technology and impressive performance capabilities, while the Jeep Recon is marketed as a more rugged and off-road-capable vehicle. This raises the question - which one is better suited for your needs? The Rivian R2 boasts a sleek and modern design, with a focus on comfort and convenience. Its interior features premium materials, advanced infotainment systems, and generous cargo space. The exterior design is equally impressive, with a sporty stance and aggressive lines. However, its high price tag may be a deterrent for some buyers. On the other hand, the Jeep Recon has a more utilitarian approach to design, prioritizing functionality over luxury. Its ruggedized body and off-road-capable suspension make it an excellent choice for those who need a vehicle that can handle challenging terrain. The Rivian R2 is powered by four electric motors, producing a combined output of 754 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque. This allows the SUV to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, making it one of the fastest production vehicles on the market. The Jeep Recon, on the other hand, has a more modest powertrain, with a single electric motor producing 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. While this is still impressive, it lags behind the Rivian's performance capabilities. One area where the Jeep Recon excels is in its off-road capability. Its advanced suspension system and four-wheel-drive technology make it an excellent choice for those who need a vehicle that can handle challenging terrain. The Rivian R2, while capable on pavement, may not be as effective in rough terrain. However, its advanced all-wheel-drive system provides excellent traction and stability on various road surfaces. The Rivian R2 has a range of up to 400 miles on a single charge, making it an excellent choice for long road trips. The Jeep Recon's range is more modest at around 250 miles, but this may be sufficient for those who prioritize off-road capability over long-distance driving. The Rivian R2 comes with a comprehensive suite of standard features, including advanced safety systems, premium audio equipment, and a large touchscreen display. The Jeep Recon also offers a range of standard features, but its options list is more limited compared to the Rivian's offerings. The Rivian R2 has a starting price of around $69,000, making it one of the most expensive electric SUVs on the market. The Jeep Recon's starting price is significantly lower at around $38,000, making it an excellent choice for those who prioritize affordability over luxury features. Ultimately, the decision between the Rivian R2 and the Jeep Recon comes down to your priorities. If you need a vehicle that prioritizes performance, luxury, and advanced technology, the Rivian R2 may be the better choice. However, if you prioritize off-road capability and affordability, the Jeep Recon is an excellent option. The electric vehicle market is rapidly evolving, with new models and technologies emerging every year. As such, it's essential to stay informed about the latest developments in this space. Both Rivian and Jeep are pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, but which one will come out on top? Only time will tell. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, manufacturers like Rivian and Jeep will need to continue innovating to meet consumer expectations. With their commitment to sustainability and performance, these two SUVs are well-positioned to lead the charge in the electric vehicle market.

Alaska Gasoline Conundrum
Jalopnik·Automotive·Mar 21, 2026
Alaska Gasoline Conundrum
Alaskans have long been puzzled by the absence of gasoline with an octane rating above 90. Despite numerous searches, no official acknowledgment of this limit has been found in government or industry sources. The situation seems almost conspiratorial, but a closer examination reveals more mundane explanations. One possible reason for the octane cap is Alaska's lack of ethanol production, which is used to create most high-octane gasoline. This limitation presents a significant roadblock in the production of premium gasolines. Alaska's refining capabilities are also limited by its reliance on just one major refinery, the Marathon refinery in Kenai. Producing high-octane gas without ethanol would require significant investments in new equipment, which is likely to be prohibitively expensive for smaller refineries. The state's top refinery has a capacity of only 68,000 barrels per day, with most of its output going towards jet fuel, diesel, and other products. High-octane gas is typically produced by blending ethanol with refined gasoline. Most crude oil produces gasoline with an octane rating of around 84, which is then blended with ethanol to create a higher-octane version. However, producing premium gasolines requires a more complex process involving the use of blendstocks and alkylation. The latter process involves mixing chemicals to form hydrocarbons with high octane ratings, but it requires expensive equipment that few refineries in Alaska can afford. The lack of ethanol production in Alaska is largely due to the state's cold climate, which makes it difficult to grow corn. As a result, most ethanol comes from other states, and transportation costs are high due to the corrosive effect of ethanol on pipelines. The absence of rail lines connecting Alaska to the Lower 48 further exacerbates this issue, leaving gasolines capped at 90 octane. The situation is particularly challenging for Alaskans who own vehicles that require premium gasoline. Some engines can only run on high-octane fuel, making it difficult for residents to find suitable alternatives. The lack of options has led many to wonder if there's a conspiracy behind the absence of high-octane gasolines in Alaska. While some experts have questioned the official story surrounding the octane limit, our research suggests that the reasons are more practical than conspiratorial. The limitations imposed by Alaska's refining capabilities and reliance on ethanol production create significant barriers to producing premium gasolines. It remains to be seen whether new technologies or investments will help address this issue in the future. In theory, it is possible to produce high-octane gasoline without ethanol using alkylation processes. However, these methods require expensive equipment that few refineries in Alaska can afford. The state's refining capabilities are already stretched thin, and adding new technologies would likely be a significant undertaking. The situation highlights the complexities of the US fuel infrastructure. While some states have more refined gasolines available, others face challenges due to their unique geography or climate conditions. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Alaska addresses its gasoline conundrum in the coming years. For now, Alaskans are left to wonder why they can't find premium gasolines beyond 90 octane. While the official story may not be entirely clear-cut, our research suggests that practical limitations rather than conspiracy theories are at play. We invite readers to share their thoughts on this issue and explore other articles on fuel infrastructure and engine maintenance.
Solar Power Gains Unlikely Allies
CleanTechnica·EV·Mar 21, 2026
Solar Power Gains Unlikely Allies
The US Department of Agriculture plays a crucial role in the development and funding of solar projects on farmland, providing grants and loan guarantees to help farmers save money on their energy costs. This initiative has been ongoing since 2002, with the Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvements Program emerging during the presidency of George W. Bush. The program was later transitioned into the present-day REAP (Rural Energy for America Program) initiative in 2008, just in time for Barack Obama to take office in January of 2009. By the time President Donald Trump first took office in 2017, REAP was in full solar mode, providing funds for solar-powered grain dryers and other solar projects. However, Trump's administration suddenly froze REAP disbursements shortly after taking office, resulting in a loss of over $1 billion, including more than $600 million in signed commitments to farmers and small businesses. The case went to court, and in April, a federal judge ordered the REAP funds to be released. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins then staged a press event in August, announcing new restrictions on REAP that applied only to wind and solar power. These restrictions placed new documentation burdens on farmers, prevented them from expanding their business with wind or solar power, and cut them off entirely from revenue-producing opportunities through the sale of electricity off-site. The restrictions were met with criticism, particularly from farmland conservationists who argued that they would exacerbate the loss of farmland to low-density housing and other development projects. In fact, researchers at the University of Tennessee note that the state already lost about 9% of its farmland within a 20-year period from 1997 to 2017, when the solar industry had yet to emerge in any substantial way. The new restrictions on REAP have been seen as an attempt to restrict the growth of the solar industry, but it remains to be seen whether they will have a significant impact. The state's solar profile has ramped up since 2018, with just 1,206 megawatts installed, hardly enough to account for the loss of more than 1.2 million acres of farmland over the past 30 years. The real issue at hand is not the growth of solar power itself, but rather the impact of low-density housing and other development projects on farmland conservation. Farmland conservationists argue that these projects are a major driver of farmland loss, particularly in rural areas. In response to this issue, Tennessee established a new $25 million fund to buy conservation easements from farmers, taking the land out of production while preserving it for agriculture at some future date. This measure aims to stem the bleeding of farmland loss and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Fuel Efficiency Leader
The Drive·Automotive·Mar 21, 2026
Fuel Efficiency Leader
Honda has taken the top spot as America's most fuel-efficient gas automaker, with an average of 31.0 mpg across its 2024-model-year lineup. This surpasses the industry average by 3.8 mpg and puts it ahead of second-place Hyundai. The company's hybrid-first strategy is paying off, with over 400,000 hybrids sold in the US for the first time in 2025. The growth of Honda's hybrid sales can be attributed to models like the Accord, Civic, and CR-V, which have all seen record sales for the third year in a row. In contrast, other automakers like Toyota are selling fewer efficient models, such as pickups and SUVs, while also offering less-efficient gas-powered vehicles. However, it's worth noting that Tesla achieved an equivalent of 117.1 mpg across its lineup of EVs for the 2024 model year. This is a significant achievement, but it's difficult to compare directly with Honda's results due to differences in how fuel efficiency is measured. The EPA's Automotive Trends Report found that Honda's average fuel economy improved by 2.7 mpg between model years 2023 and 2024. While this is a notable improvement, the industry average saw only a 0.1-mpg increase during the same period. This highlights Honda's commitment to reducing emissions through more efficient vehicles. Despite its success in fuel efficiency, Honda faces criticism for its use of the term "electrified vehicles" to describe its hybrids. Some argue that this distinction is unnecessary and can be misleading. The company has also cancelled its next-generation EVs, which may impact its long-term competitiveness in the market. The automotive industry is shifting towards electric vehicles, which are more efficient than traditional gas-powered cars. As a result, Honda's lack of EVs may become a liability in the future. However, the company's hybrid-first strategy has shown promise, and it will be interesting to see how it adapts to changing market trends. Honda's focus on fuel efficiency is not surprising, given its long history of innovation in this area. The company has been at the forefront of developing more efficient vehicles for decades, and its commitment to reducing emissions remains strong. The EPA's Automotive Trends Report provides valuable insights into the automotive industry's progress towards sustainability. By analyzing data on fuel economy and emissions, companies can identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to reduce their environmental impact. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, it will be important for manufacturers like Honda to stay ahead of the curve in terms of fuel efficiency and sustainability. With its hybrid-first strategy and commitment to reducing emissions, Honda is well-positioned to lead the way in this critical area.

The Lamborghini Miura is undoubtedly an iconic supercar, with its sleek design and powerful engine making it a favorite among car enthusiasts. However, not all Miuras are created equal, as some have been customized to stand out from the crowd. Eddie Van Halen's personal Miura, gifted to him by his wife Valerie Bertinelli in 1981, is one such example. This custom Miura was adorned with unique touches that set it apart from other models of its time. A bright red paint job, split-rim alloy wheels, and aggressive body modifications gave the car a distinctive look that was more reminiscent of the Lamborghini Countach than the Miura itself. The license plate 'APR 11' also signified their wedding date, adding a personal touch to the already impressive vehicle. The story behind Eddie Van Halen's Miura is one of intrigue and discovery. John Temerian, founder of Curated Motors, was instrumental in uncovering the car's history and restoring it to its former glory. Temerian had been an avid Miura enthusiast for years and saw this as an opportunity to not only restore the car but also write a chapter in Lamborghini's history. BMW's Next X5 Gets a Fresh New Look and Wide Range of Engine Choices
BMW's next-generation 2027 (or possibly, 2028MY) X5 has finally been given a clearer glimpse of its design thanks to new detailed renderings. The early leaks didn't offer much in terms of visual details, but these latest visuals make it easier to identify the key changes that will set this new model apart from its predecessor. One of the most notable aspects of the new design is the adoption of a fresh styling direction, which mirrors the second-generation iX3 revealed six months ago. The front end of the X5 features upright kidney grilles and distinctive headlights, now paired with X-shaped daytime running lights. The lower section of the fascia is finished in gloss black, a panel that is also expected to integrate sensors and cameras for the SUV's driver-assistance systems. This new design direction marks a significant shift away from the more restrained look of the current model. The sides of the X5 have been simplified, with convoluted lines from the outgoing model ditched in favor of smoother door panels and front and rear quarter panels with squared-off indentations. The aggressive rear design, including a sharply styled two-tone bumper, a diffuser, and quad tailpipes, is also expected to carry over into these renderings. The cabin display setup for the X5 has been confirmed, with BMW's latest Panoramic iDrive setup featuring a central touchscreen paired with a slim display stretching across the base of the windscreen. This full-width screen will handle essential driving information, navigation, and media, all positioned directly in the driver's line of sight. The new X5 is expected to offer an unusually wide range of engine choices, spanning gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric, and even hydrogen configurations. This move is likely to appeal to a broad range of buyers, from those seeking a more traditional driving experience to those prioritizing sustainability and zero-emission capabilities. On the electric side, at least six variants are anticipated, including the possibility of a range-extender EV still on the table. The all-electric variant will be called the iX5, mirroring the i5's familiar tiered lineup, with the entry-level eDrive40 expected to deliver around 340 hp and the iX5 M60 pushing close to 600 hp. The new X5 is expected to debut around mid-2026, with customer deliveries likely beginning in early 2027. This marks a significant shift in BMW's product lineup, as the company moves towards a more diverse range of powertrains and models. With its fresh design direction, wide range of engine choices, and competitive pricing, the new X5 is poised to challenge established luxury SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport, as well as newer electric rivals such as the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3.
The Silent Killer in Your Engine
Jalopnik·Automotive·Mar 21, 2026
The Silent Killer in Your Engine
A rhythmic pinging sound that progressively increases as you step on the throttle is a clear indication of rod knock, a condition where your engine is running on borrowed time. Ignoring it for an extended period can result in the engine seizing up, leaving you stranded on the side of the road. The question remains, how can you tell if it's rod knock or something else that's causing the noise? With sounds similar to failing water pump bearings and tappety valves, it's essential to seek the help of someone with a trained ear to diagnose the issue accurately. For those who are mechanically inclined, diagnosing the origin of the sound is a good starting point. If the ticking sound is located at the bottom of the engine and becomes louder as you press the throttle pedal, it's likely rod knock. On the other hand, if the noise is closer to the top of the engine and progresses relatively slowly, it may be related to the valvetrain. Inspecting the engine oil for excessive metal shavings can confirm suspicions of a rod knock, provided the symptoms align with low oil levels and reduced oil pressure. However, understanding the role of rod bearings in an engine is crucial to grasping this concept. Rod bearings are typically softer multi-metal varieties sandwiched between the crankshaft and connecting rod, separated by a thin layer of oil. This oil acts as a barrier between the bearing's surface and that of the crank journal, reducing friction when the engine has sufficient oil levels. However, when the engine is low on oil, this barrier weakens, resulting in direct metal-to-metal contact and increased friction. The consequences of this increased friction are dire: it can lead to premature wear and tear on the rod bearings, ultimately causing them to fail. This failure can then trigger a chain reaction of problems throughout the engine, culminating in catastrophic failure if left unchecked. In addition to diagnosing the issue, it's essential to understand when to take action. The sooner you address the problem, the less likely you are to suffer the consequences of prolonged neglect. By recognizing the symptoms of rod knock and taking prompt action, you can prevent costly repairs down the line. The importance of regular maintenance cannot be overstated in this context. Regular oil changes, checks for leaks, and inspections can help identify potential issues before they become major problems. By staying on top of your engine's health, you can avoid the devastating consequences of rod knock. In conclusion, rod knock is a silent killer that can wreak havoc on your engine if left unchecked. By understanding its causes, symptoms, and consequences, you can take proactive steps to prevent it from becoming a major issue down the line. Ultimately, addressing rod knock requires a combination of knowledge, vigilance, and prompt action. By staying informed and taking care of your engine, you can avoid the financial and emotional stress that comes with dealing with this debilitating condition.

Electric Vehicle Market Sees Shift as Buyers Opt for Used Models
Carscoops·Automotive·Mar 21, 2026
Electric Vehicle Market Sees Shift as Buyers Opt for Used Models
In February, the new electric vehicle (EV) market saw sales figures that were just under 69,000 units, which may not seem like a lot given the hype surrounding EVs. However, when you consider that this represents only a 5.8 percent increase compared to January and a 27 percent decrease from last year's numbers, it becomes clear that the market is facing some challenges. Despite this, there are signs of hope for the industry as buyers begin to opt for used EV models over new ones. One of the main reasons behind this shift could be the recent gas price spike in the US, which may have led some drivers to reconsider their options. Additionally, the war in Iran has also had an impact on the market, causing prices to rise and potentially making buyers more interested in electric vehicles. However, these factors do not seem to be reflected in the sales figures for new EVs. It's worth noting that while new EV sales have slowed down, incentives are playing a significant role in keeping buyers engaged. On average, incentives climbed to about $7,870 per vehicle, which is now accounting for more than 14 percent of the average transaction price. This suggests that automakers are relying heavily on discounts to keep buyers interested. Tesla still leads the pack with around 38,500 units sold, but even the company's market share slipped 4 percent month over month as rivals started to gain ground. Chevrolet had a particularly strong month, with demand jumping 70 percent versus January, while Hyundai and Toyota also saw an increase in sales. In contrast, Ford and Nissan's performances suffered, as did EV sales overall. This could be due to various factors such as increased competition or changes in consumer behavior. However, it's clear that the industry is facing some challenges and needs to find ways to adapt and innovate. On a separate note, the used EV market is experiencing a quiet surge in demand. Sales jumped nearly 29 percent year over year, with almost 31,000 units finding new homes. This represents a modest 4.2 percent increase from January, pointing to steady month-over-month momentum. Prices for used EVs are also dropping rapidly, with the average price now standing at just under $35,000. This is down more than 8 percent year over year and makes them far more tempting for budget-minded buyers. In fact, many used EVs now cost less than their gas-powered equivalents, which would have been hard to believe not long ago. The report also notes that inventory is tightening, especially for used EVs, suggesting demand is finally starting to match supply as the market shifts from the oversupply headaches of recent months. This could lead to prices rising in the future, but for now, it's a positive sign for the industry. Furthermore, the supply of used EVs has dropped to about 42 days, which is now slightly exceeding comparable gas vehicle levels for the first time in nearly a year. This indicates that demand is finally starting to catch up with supply, and it will be interesting to see how this trend develops in the coming months.
Tesla Cleared of One-Pedal Driving Recall
InsideEVs (News)·EV·Mar 21, 2026
Tesla Cleared of One-Pedal Driving Recall
The US government has announced that Tesla's vehicles are safe from a potential recall related to the company's one-pedal driving system. The issue, which could have affected over 2 million cars, was discovered through a routine inspection of the company's fleet. As a result, Tesla will not be issuing a recall for its vehicles equipped with this feature. The government's decision is a significant relief for Tesla, which has faced scrutiny over safety concerns related to its Autopilot system in the past. One-pedal driving, also known as 'partial self-driving,' allows drivers to accelerate and brake without touching the steering wheel or pedals. This technology has been at the center of controversy due to concerns that it could lead to accidents if not used properly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted an investigation into the issue after receiving reports from Tesla owners about problems with the one-pedal driving system. The agency found that the issue was related to a software problem that caused some vehicles to malfunction and behave erratically. However, it was determined that this malfunction did not pose a significant safety risk to drivers. The NHTSA's decision is a testament to Tesla's commitment to safety and its ongoing efforts to improve the Autopilot system. The company has been working closely with regulators to address concerns about the technology and ensure that it meets strict safety standards. As a result, Tesla's vehicles will continue to be considered safe for use on public roads. The one-pedal driving system is designed to assist drivers in certain situations, such as merging onto highways or navigating heavy traffic. However, it is not intended to replace human judgment and decision-making entirely. In fact, the NHTSA has emphasized that the system should only be used under specific conditions and with caution. The government's decision not to issue a recall for Tesla's one-pedal driving system is likely to be seen as a victory for the company. However, it also highlights the ongoing challenges of regulating autonomous vehicle technology. As more companies develop and deploy self-driving systems, regulators will need to continue to adapt and refine their rules and guidelines to ensure public safety. The NHTSA's decision may also have implications for other automakers that offer similar one-pedal driving features in their vehicles. If Tesla is deemed safe despite its software problem, it could set a precedent for other companies to follow suit. However, this also raises questions about the consistency and fairness of regulatory enforcement. Ultimately, the NHTSA's decision demonstrates that even complex safety issues can be resolved through careful investigation and analysis. As the automotive industry continues to evolve with new technologies like autonomous vehicles, it is essential that regulators remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring public safety.
Ford's Forgotten Futuristic Bronco Concept

Ford's Forgotten Futuristic Bronco Concept
In the past, concept cars were often more experimental and willing to take risks, rather than being mere marketing tools for upcoming production models. The Ford Bronco Montana Lobo concept is a prime example of this approach. Unveiled in 1980, it was one of several design elements that Ford threw at its off-roader. The Montana Lobo aimed to give the Bronco a futuristic look, but unfortunately, its future never materialized. After its public debut, the concept went largely unmentioned by Ford until recently, when the automaker posted about it on Instagram. According to the original press release, the Montana Lobo is based on a pre-1977 Bronco frame, meaning the first generation of the vehicle. This was back when auto shows were still relevant and played an important role in showcasing new designs and technologies. Ford introduced the second-generation Bronco for the 1978 model year, and had just launched the third gen when the Montana Lobo was unveiled as one of Ford's exhibits for the upcoming 1981 auto show circuit. This highlights the importance of concept cars in the automotive industry during that era. The Montana Lobo represents more than just a show vehicle; it's a collection of ideas and designs that may be used in future Ford four-wheel vehicles. According to William H. Cramer, manager of Ford's Advanced and International Design Center, which developed the concept alongside Italian styling house Ghia. Those ideas and designs included plexiglass bubble doors that could be removed and replaced with webbing, T-tops, integrated storage compartments in the sides of its mini-pickup bed, and side exhausts neatly integrated with the running boards. A roll bar with lights and whip antenna were obligatory accessories on any 1980s off-roader. The interior design is shared with the 1980 Ford Thunderbird and houses a digital instrument cluster that was a novel feature at the time. The black vinyl seats featured heating and ventilation, which was a common feature in modern cars but not in the early 1980s. Inside, the bed has fold-down seats and is lined with woven hemp, while the tailgate doubles as a ramp for loading and unloading cargo. This attention to detail highlights Ford's commitment to creating functional and practical designs. The Montana Lobo was powered by a 5.0-liter V8 connected to an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, which turned all-terrain tires mounted to 15-inch wheels. Its dimensions were notable for its time, with the vehicle being longer and taller than a base Bronco two-door of today but narrower. Ford never did give the production Bronco plexiglass bubble doors and a hemp-lined pickup bed, which makes the Montana Lobo concept all the more interesting. This highlights the company's willingness to experiment and try new things, even if they didn't always make it into production.

Dealership's Greedy Tactics Exposed: Elderly Man Sold $70K Jeep Without License
A disturbing incident has come to light in Douglas County, Georgia, where an 83-year-old man named James Benson allegedly purchased a new Jeep Grand Cherokee for nearly $70,000 without holding a valid driver's license. The sale was completed by a salesman from Scott Evans Jeep, who claims that Benson responded to an advertisement and went missing for approximately 30 hours before returning with the vehicle. This raises serious concerns about the dealership's oversight and the elderly man's mental capacity at the time of purchase. Benson's family members are questioning how the sale was completed, particularly given his dementia diagnosis and lack of driving experience. The situation has sparked a heated debate about the dealership's responsibility in ensuring that customers are capable of making informed decisions before signing off on large purchases. It is essential to note that Benson's wife had co-signed the loan, but she reportedly has memory-related issues and does not recall doing so. The dealership has offered to refund just over $3,000 in purchase-related fees but has not agreed to a full refund or the return of the $5,000 deposit. This lack of transparency and accountability is concerning, particularly when dealing with vulnerable individuals who may be more susceptible to exploitation. It is crucial that dealerships prioritize their customers' well-being and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. Benson passed away in February, and his widow has since been moved to a mental health facility, where she is now responsible for monthly payments of $750 tied to the vehicle. The situation highlights the long-term consequences of such transactions and the need for more comprehensive support systems for elderly individuals who may be struggling with cognitive decline. The dealership's refusal to reconsider its position has left Benson's daughter feeling frustrated and concerned about her family's financial future. She is now exploring legal options, which could potentially lead to a resolution through legal proceedings or settlement. This case serves as a reminder that vulnerable individuals deserve protection and support when dealing with complex transactions. It is essential to note that the dealership reportedly told Benson's daughter that it 'did not discriminate against the elderly.' However, this statement does little to alleviate concerns about the dealership's responsibility in ensuring that customers are capable of making informed decisions. The incident raises questions about the effectiveness of existing regulations and the need for more stringent oversight. The situation has sparked a wider conversation about the importance of verifying a person's mental capacity before making large financial transactions. This is particularly crucial when dealing with vulnerable individuals like the elderly, who may be more susceptible to exploitation. Dealerships must prioritize their customers' well-being and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Benson's family will ultimately resolve this matter. However, one thing is clear: the dealership's actions have raised serious concerns about its responsibility and accountability. This case serves as a reminder that vulnerable individuals deserve protection and support when dealing with complex transactions. The incident highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the automotive industry, particularly when dealing with vulnerable individuals. Dealerships must prioritize their customers' well-being and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. By doing so, they can help ensure that all customers are treated fairly and with respect. In conclusion, this case serves as a wake-up call for dealerships and regulatory bodies alike. It is essential that we prioritize our most vulnerable citizens and take steps to prevent exploitation. By doing so, we can create a safer and more equitable automotive industry for everyone.

While the Lotus Carlton isn't every bit the barn-stormer as the Corvette ZR-1, it ain't exactly far off, either. The Carlton's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine produces 247 horsepower, which may not seem like a lot compared to other high-performance cars on the market. However, this modest power output belies the car's impressive handling and agility. As a result, the Lotus Carlton is able to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 5.6 seconds, making it a formidable opponent on the road. The Lotus Carlton's design is often cited as one of its most distinctive features. The car's sleek, aerodynamic bodywork is designed to reduce drag and improve high-speed stability. With its wedge-shaped profile and angular lines, the Carlton cuts through the air with ease, making it a joy to drive at high speeds. The dashboard is dominated by a series of gauges and switches, giving the driver complete control over the car's performance. The Lotus Carlton is often overlooked in favor of its more powerful siblings, but this car has a certain charm that sets it apart from the crowd. Its unique blend of style, performance, and handling makes it an ideal choice for anyone looking to add some excitement to their driving routine. Whether you're a seasoned car enthusiast or just looking for a fun weekend drive, the Lotus Carlton is definitely worth considering. One of the most interesting aspects of the Lotus Carlton is its connection to the British royal family. With its sleek design and impressive performance capabilities, the Carlton is a fitting addition to any royal motorcade. Today, the Lotus Carlton remains one of the most sought-after classic cars on the market. Its unique blend of style, performance, and handling makes it an ideal choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Whether you're looking to add a rare gem to your collection or simply want to experience the thrill of driving this iconic sports car, the Lotus Carlton is definitely worth tracking down. In conclusion, the Lotus Carlton may not be the most powerful car on the market, but its impressive handling, agile chassis, and unique blend of style make it an absolute joy to drive. For those who value performance, handling, and style above all else, the Carlton is a must-consider for any serious car enthusiast.

LEGO Powers Up with 100% Renewable Energy at New US Factory
The LEGO Group is making a major move towards powering its new US factory with 100% renewable energy, installing a large solar array at the site in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The company's decision to harness solar power is part of its broader effort to make its operations more sustainable as it expands manufacturing in the US. By doing so, LEGO aims to reduce its environmental impact and set a new standard for responsible business practices in the industry. This initiative is also expected to provide a significant boost to the local community, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth in the region. The solar array at the LEGO factory will feature over 30,700 ground-mounted solar panels with a total capacity of 22 megawatts peak (MWp), spread across nearly 80 acres. This massive installation is expected to cover a significant portion of the factory's annual electricity use, reducing its reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowering its carbon emissions. The project's sheer scale is a testament to LEGO's commitment to sustainability and its willingness to invest in cutting-edge renewable energy technologies. In addition to the solar array, LEGO is also installing rooftop panels on the factory itself, adding an additional 10,080 units with a total capacity of 6.11 MWp. This will further enhance the site's on-site power generation capabilities, reducing its dependence on external energy sources and minimizing its carbon footprint. By integrating renewable energy into its operations, LEGO is taking a proactive approach to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. The factory itself is still under construction, with the main structure reaching its steel topping out
Hyundai Axes Ioniq 6 Sedan Amid Shift to Performance Models

Hyundai Axes Ioniq 6 Sedan Amid Shift to Performance Models
The automotive landscape has undergone significant changes in recent years, with electric vehicles (EVs) becoming increasingly popular among consumers. In response to this trend, manufacturers have been introducing new EV models and variants to cater to the growing demand. Hyundai is no exception, having recently unveiled a refreshed version of its Ioniq 6 sedan for the South Korean market. Initially, the updated model was expected to be launched in the United States, but Hyundai has now announced that it will discontinue the standard Ioniq 6 following the 2025 model year. This decision may seem counterintuitive, given the growing popularity of EVs and the potential benefits of maintaining a wider range of models in the market. The discontinuation of the Ioniq 6 sedan is attributed to Hyundai's focus on its high-performance variants, such as the Ioniq 6 N. The latter features the newer, sleeker bodywork and is expected to be launched in limited quantities in the United States in 2026. This strategy shift is likely aimed at driving growth and profitability for the company, as performance-oriented models tend to command higher prices and generate more revenue than standard sedans. In terms of sales figures, Hyundai has reported a decline in Ioniq 6 units sold in 2025 compared to the previous year. The company sold 10,478 units of the Ioniq 6 in 2025, down from 12,264 the year before. This decline may be attributed to various factors, including increased competition in the EV market and changing consumer preferences. The discontinuation of the Ioniq 6 sedan also raises questions about Hyundai's overall strategy for its electric vehicle lineup. Will the company focus on maintaining a wider range of models, or will it continue to prioritize performance-oriented variants? The decision made by Hyundai may have implications for other manufacturers in the industry, as they navigate their own strategies for EV development and sales. In addition to the Ioniq 6 N, Hyundai plans to introduce other high-performance variants in the future. These models are expected to be launched in various markets around the world, including the United States. The company's focus on performance-oriented models is likely aimed at driving growth and profitability, as well as generating buzz and excitement among EV enthusiasts. The discontinuation of the Ioniq 6 sedan may also have implications for consumers who were looking forward to purchasing this model. Hyundai has offered a range of alternatives in the market, including other sedans and hatchbacks with similar features and specifications. However, these models may not offer the same level of performance or excitement as the Ioniq 6 N. The decision made by Hyundai is part of a broader trend in the automotive industry towards greater specialization and focus on specific niches. As manufacturers continue to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by EVs, they are likely to prioritize models that meet specific customer needs and preferences. In conclusion, the discontinuation of the Ioniq 6 sedan marks an important shift in Hyundai's strategy towards performance-oriented models. The introduction of the Ioniq 6 N in limited quantities in 2026 is expected to drive growth and profitability for the company, while also generating excitement among EV enthusiasts. The future of the automotive industry will likely be shaped by manufacturers' responses to changing consumer preferences and technological advancements. As the market continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how Hyundai's strategy will unfold and what impact it will have on the wider industry.

CPKC Sees Luck in New Mexico-Canada Trade Growth
Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) has reported a 2.2% increase in revenue ton-miles for the quarter to date, driven by growth in new markets and connections between Mexico and Canada. Despite volume being down 1.7%, measured by carloads and containers, CPKC's CEO Keith Creel attributes this to tough comparisons with the first quarter of 2025, when shippers rushed to beat looming U.S. tariffs. CPKC has made significant progress in connecting new markets, enabling growth in the industry despite a challenging macro environment. The new network has been key to this success, and Creel believes that trade disagreements between the U.S. and Mexico and Canada will be resolved, likely with Mexico first. He notes that foreign investment in new manufacturing plants in Mexico has been waiting for resolution of trade disputes. A renegotiated trade deal with Mexico is expected to provide certainty necessary for companies to invest in new facilities. In 2024, traffic between Mexico and Canada accounted for just 2% of CPKC's revenue, but this has increased to almost 3%, generating over $500 million in new incremental revenue. The company expects another $100 million this year. CPKC is handling more shipments of french fries, grain, and petroleum products between the two countries. The launch of a dedicated intermodal train using their new interchange in Myrtlewood, Ala., on the former Meridian & Bigbee short line, will further enhance connectivity. The new service, Southeast Mexico Express (SMX), will enable faster transportation from Atlanta to Monterrey in three days and middle Mexico in four days. CPKC's infrastructure upgrades will allow for 49-mph operation over the line, which stretches from Meridian, Miss., to the outskirts of Montgomery, Ala. Creel emphasizes that building a new service requires upfront investment and growth. He notes that customers like Amazon, auto parts suppliers, and service-sensitive truckload customers will be attracted to the SMX service once it proves reliable. CPKC is close to its merger-related goal of taking 64,000 truckloads off the highway annually. However, the slower-than-expected pace is due to excess truck capacity, low trucking rates, and the time it takes to roll out new initiatives like the Americold cold storage warehouse that opened this year. Creel is skeptical of the 2 million truckload gain projected by Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern's proposed merger. He believes that converting highway freight to intermodal does not happen overnight and requires significant time and effort.

The Hormuz Shock: The End of Cheap Oil?
CleanTechnica·EV·Mar 19, 2026
The Hormuz Shock: The End of Cheap Oil?
Roughly 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and refined products have normally moved through Hormuz in recent years, alongside about one-fifth of global LNG trade and a meaningful share of seaborne ammonia, urea, and phosphate fertilizers. The physical exposure is concentrated in Asia, not North America. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China all sit somewhere on that spectrum of vulnerability. Oil is the first-order story because it sets the benchmark price for transport fuels and it moves the largest volume of value through the system, but it is not the only story and not necessarily the most interesting one. The question is not simply whether oil goes to $100 or $150 a barrel. The larger question is whether a shock of this kind speeds the transition toward what can fairly be called the electrostate, an economy that substitutes domestic electricity, storage, and electric end uses for imported molecular fuels wherever practical. An LNG shortage can push countries back toward coal, fuel oil, and emergency contracting. It can also increase the appeal of nuclear, renewables, storage, and electrified end uses, but it does not do so on a clean timetable. Fertilizer is where this crisis becomes more consequential than many energy analysts first assume. Ammonia and urea are not side notes to the oil story. They are central to the food system. The IEA has estimated that more than 30% of global urea trade and about 20% of ammonia and phosphate trade move through Hormuz. Reuters reporting has similarly put about one-third of global fertilizer trade at risk through the route. A country that thinks of itself as energy secure because it produces a lot of oil can discover quickly that it is still exposed through nitrogen fertilizer and related inputs. The United States, in particular, is vulnerable to disruptions in this critical chokepoint. The country's reliance on imported fuels, particularly oil and LNG, makes it susceptible to price shocks and supply disruptions. Decarbonization efforts will be slowed by the impact of a Hormuz disruption, pushing up inflation, interest rates, shipping costs, and food prices. A more resilient energy system is needed to support these transition goals. The world's top oil producers are likely to face significant economic challenges in the coming months as they struggle to maintain supply and meet growing demand for fuels. The impact of a Hormuz disruption will be felt across the globe, from Asia to Europe and North America.

New Safety Measures to Crack Down on Foreign Truck Drivers
FreightWaves·Trucking·Mar 19, 2026
New Safety Measures to Crack Down on Foreign Truck Drivers
The U.S. government has taken significant steps to address issues with truck drivers who live outside the country, aiming to improve road safety and prevent deadly crashes. Two major initiatives have been implemented: a new FMCSA rule and the proposed Dalilah's Law. These measures target non-domiciled commercial driver's licenses (CDLs), which are special truck licenses for individuals who don't reside in a U.S. state. The previous lack of proper checks led to thousands of licenses being issued without verifying drivers' immigration status, resulting in fatal crashes. The FMCSA rule, which went into effect on March 16, 2026, focuses solely on non-domiciled CDLs and limits who can obtain these licenses to U.S. citizens, nationals, lawful permanent residents, or individuals on specific work visas. Drivers must present a valid passport and I-94 form, and states must check immigration status using a government system before issuing, renewing, or upgrading any license. This new regulation aims to ensure that every truck driver on U.S. roads has been properly vetted for safety, reducing the risk of accidents caused by unvetted foreign drivers. The rule's focus on non-domiciled CDLs ensures that existing licenses are mostly grandfathered until they expire but cannot be renewed without new proof. In contrast, Dalilah's Law proposes more comprehensive changes to the CDL system, making its limits permanent law if passed by Congress. This bill would require states to audit all current foreign-domiciled licenses within one year and revoke any that don't meet the rules, potentially resulting in a loss of up to 8 percent of federal highway funding for non-compliant states. The key differences between these two measures lie in their scope and permanence. The FMCSA rule is a regulation that can be easily changed or weakened by future administrations, whereas Dalilah's Law would lock the changes into law, adding English language requirements for safety and fairness. Dalilah's Law also forces states to clean up old mistakes and punishes companies that break the rules, making it a more comprehensive toolbox for improving road safety. This bill has the potential to prevent future tragedies like the one that inspired its creation, which resulted in the critical injury of a five-year-old girl in California. The implementation of these measures marks a significant shift towards safer roads and stricter regulations on foreign truck drivers. As the days of easy loopholes for unvetted foreign drivers come to an end, truckers, companies, and everyday drivers can expect improved road safety and reduced risk of accidents. While both measures share similarities in their focus on non-domiciled CDLs, Dalilah's Law offers a more comprehensive approach to addressing the issue. The proposed law's emphasis on English language requirements for safety and fairness adds an important layer of protection for drivers and passengers alike. Ultimately, the success of these initiatives will depend on the willingness of states and companies to comply with the new regulations. As the U.S. government continues to prioritize road safety, it is essential that all stakeholders work together to ensure that these measures are effective in preventing future tragedies.

SUPER73 Redefines Commuter E-Bikes with Modular Batteries and Practical Design
The electric bike market has seen a significant shift in recent years, with brands like SUPER73 leading the charge towards more practical and commuter-focused designs. The latest addition to the brand's lineup, the A-Series, marks a major overhaul of its previous models, signaling a new direction for the company that blends style and functionality. The A-Series is the result of a decade-long journey for SUPER73, with every bike in the collection being redesigned from the ground up to cater to a wider range of riders. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-most approaches, as the brand now offers three distinct seat height platforms: 27-inch, 30-inch, and 33-inch, making its bikes more accessible to commuters of all shapes and sizes. The new lineup also features modular batteries that can be easily swapped or added to extend range, a feature that could make these e-bikes more versatile for commuting. This secondary battery system is built on a 52V platform and offers 520 Wh per pack, allowing riders to save money or add extra capacity depending on their needs. The A-Series keeps the brand's unmistakable design language, with chunky frames, moto-style seating, and bold colorways that lean more towards streetwear culture than traditional cycling. However, this time around, SUPER73 has prioritized practicality over pure aesthetics, introducing features like integrated storage solutions that go beyond the brand's earlier focus on style. The bikes also feature updated tech, including front suspension on all models, making them more suitable for longer rides and more demanding terrain. The Special Edition (SE) versions of each model come with upgrades like larger batteries, adjustable front suspension, and updated digital displays, pushing the lineup to the higher end of the mid-tier e-bike pricing bracket. The introduction of modular batteries is a strategic move by SUPER73 that could make its e-bikes more appealing to commuters who want to extend range without committing to a permanently larger and heavier battery every day. This feature has been seen on the new MZFT line, but it appears to be a strategy that the brand is sticking to. Despite the practical upgrades, SUPER73 hasn't abandoned its roots. The A-Series keeps the brand's signature style and identity intact, making it clear that this is still a company that values individuality and self-expression. However, this time around, the brand has taken a more community-driven approach, positioning the new lineup as a continuation of its past rather than a departure. The launch of the A-Series marks a significant milestone for SUPER73, as the brand approaches ten years of innovation. The company's CEO, Travis Erwin, framed the launch as both a reflection on the company's past and a statement about its future, highlighting the importance of community and individuality in the e-bike market. The A-Series is set to shake up the commuter e-bike market with its practical design and modular battery system. As the brand continues to evolve and adapt to changing consumer needs, it will be interesting to see how this new lineup performs in the market and whether it can maintain SUPER73's reputation for style and innovation.

Port of Long Beach Sees Solid Cargo Volumes Amid Global Uncertainty
The Port of Long Beach reported a notable increase in cargo volumes in February 2026, handling 767,525 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), an uptick of 0.3% from the same period last year. This growth can be attributed to the port's continued efforts to optimize its operations and meet the evolving needs of its customers. The solid overall cargo volumes are a testament to the port's ability to adapt to changing market conditions, ensuring that it remains a reliable partner for shippers and carriers alike. The import sector saw a slight decline in February 2026, with imports falling by 0.2% to 368,060 TEUs. This decrease can be attributed to various factors, including increased competition from other ports and the ongoing impact of global trade tensions. However, it is worth noting that exports experienced a significant surge, rising by 8.2% to 97,422 TEUs. This growth underscores the port's importance in facilitating international trade and its role as a key player in the global supply chain. The empty container rate, which serves as an indicator of future imports, declined by 0.15% to 302,044 TEUs. This decrease suggests that shippers are beginning to adjust their expectations regarding import volumes, potentially due to concerns about global trade uncertainty and increased competition from other ports. The decline in empty containers also highlights the port's efforts to optimize its container handling operations and improve efficiency. In a statement, Port Chief Executive Dr. Noel Hacegaba noted that cargo movement at the Port of Long Beach remains fluid despite external pressures. This sentiment underscores the port's commitment to providing reliable and efficient services to its customers, even in the face of uncertainty and disruption. The conflict in the Middle East has added new uncertainty to global trade, triggering broad market conditions and reactions from parties across the supply chain. As Hacegaba noted, this conflict has already triggered a rapid rise in oil prices, which will have significant implications for supply chains worldwide. Year-to-date, the port has processed 1,615,290 TEUs, which is down 6% from the record-setting period last year. This decline can be attributed to various factors, including increased competition and global trade tensions. However, it is worth noting that the port's cargo volumes remain strong, suggesting its ability to adapt to changing market conditions. The disruption at the Strait of Hormuz has already triggered a rapid rise in oil prices, which will have significant implications for supply chains worldwide. If the Middle East conflict persists, Hacegaba cautioned that supply chains everywhere will have to navigate higher fuel and vessel operating costs and seek alternative shipping routes. The Port of Long Beach's solid cargo volumes in February 2026 serve as a reminder of its importance in facilitating international trade. As global trade continues to evolve, the port's ability to adapt and provide reliable services will be crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of supply chains worldwide. In conclusion, the Port of Long Beach's performance in February 2026 suggests that it remains a vital link in the global supply chain, despite external pressures and uncertainties. As the global economy continues to navigate the challenges posed by the Middle East conflict and other factors, the port's ability to adapt and provide reliable services will be essential for ensuring the smooth operation of supply chains worldwide.
