Eco-Friendly Hull Coating Launched

Eco-Friendly Hull Coating Launched

Mar 26, 20262 min readMarineLink News

The shipping industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, and Nippon Paint Marine has launched a new coating that meets this demand. AQUATERRAS 1100 is a biocide-free hull coating that reduces the harm caused to marine life and complies with regulations in major shipbuilding markets. This move towards a more eco-friendly approach is expected to have a positive impact on the industry's environmental reputation.

AQUATERRAS 1100 features HydroPhix, a micro-domain structure that combines hydrophilic and hydrophobic structures, reducing the ability of marine organisms to attach to hull surfaces without the use of biocides. This innovative technology allows for effective fouling control without harming the environment. The coating's unique properties make it an attractive option for shipbuilders looking to minimize their ecological footprint.

The new coating is also the first to feature Advanced Fouling Control (AFC), a silicone-modified binder technology that creates a smooth, glossy coating finish to prevent fouling without using biocides. This advanced technology provides a high-strength paint film that is resistant to mechanical damage, ensuring the coating's durability and effectiveness.

AQUATERRAS 1100 boasts Nippon Paint Marine's self-renewing, self-smoothing mechanism, HydroCure. This dynamic surface layer continuously exposes a fresh, active surface to prevent marine growth, maintain optimal hull smoothness, and reduce hydrodynamic drag. The result is a coating that delivers measurable fuel savings and is ideal for medium- to high-activity vessels.

The new coating's eco-friendly properties make it an attractive option for shipbuilders looking to reduce their environmental impact. AQUATERRAS 1100 has been designed to be as easy to apply in dry dock and newbuilding projects as conventional antifouling coatings, with compatibility tested with ROV cleaning in early testing.

Nippon Paint Marine's AQUATERRAS range is the world's first biocide-free self-polishing hull coating. Featuring micro-domain technology, it delivers long-term fouling protection and up to 14.7% fuel savings to support compliance with emissions regulations and reduce costs. This innovative coating is set to revolutionize the shipbuilding industry's approach to environmental sustainability.

AQUATERRAS has been independently tested by PML Applications to confirm its proven safety for marine life. The results of these tests demonstrate the coating's effectiveness in reducing harm to marine organisms, further solidifying its position as a leader in eco-friendly coatings.

The launch of AQUATERRAS 1100 marks an important milestone in the shift towards more environmentally friendly coatings in the shipbuilding industry. As the demand for sustainable solutions continues to grow, it is likely that we will see even more innovative products like this coating emerge in the future.

AQUATERRAS 1100's eco-friendly properties and advanced technology make it an attractive option for shipbuilders looking to minimize their environmental impact. With its proven safety record and measurable fuel savings, this coating is set to play a significant role in reducing the industry's ecological footprint.
