The world of motorcycle racing has seen its fair share of innovative engines, but Yamaha's iconic crossplane engine technology takes the cake. First introduced in the 2009 YZF-R1, this revolutionary design has now found its way into a one-off R6 produced by racing specialists, Ten Kate.
Ten Kate and Yamaha have been working closely since 2019, although this R6 prototype features a completely reworked engine that's been built entirely in-house by the Dutch company. This level of collaboration is a testament to the strong partnership between the two entities.
As a result of their success with Yamaha, Ten Kate has become an expert in the intermediate class and premier WorldSBK category. The team's history dates back to 2007, when it won the WorldSBK title with James Toseland.

However, Ten Kate's recent triumphs have been largely attributed to its work with Yamaha on the R6 model, which was used by several teams in World Supersport. This experience has undoubtedly helped the team fine-tune its skills and knowledge of the bike.
The production of the R6 was halted in 2021 due to stricter Euro5 emission regulations, but Ten Kate saw an opportunity to reimagine the model with crossplane crankshaft technology based on the R1. The result is a unique and highly sought-after one-off model.
According to Ten Kate, the R6 Crossplane project began with an in-depth study of the Yamaha R1 crossplane crankshaft and its balance shaft. This process involved scanning the assembly into a highly accurate CAD model, which provided a reference framework for evaluating the design.
The team's approach to designing the R6 Crossplane was meticulous, as they simulated the configuration to determine whether the R1 architecture could serve as a guideline for the R6 Crossplane design. This level of attention to detail is a testament to Ten Kate's commitment to innovation.
At present, there are no plans to mass-produce the one-off model, which is priced at €49,900 (around £43,550) plus VAT. However, this special edition R6 claims to produce performance figures comparable to a standard R6, with maximum power rated at approximately 126bhp and torque of 48 Ib-ft at 14,200rpm.
The creation of the Yamaha R6 Crossplane is a significant achievement for Ten Kate, demonstrating its expertise in reimagining iconic models. This one-off model will undoubtedly be a coveted prize among motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors.
As the world of motorcycle racing continues to evolve, it's clear that innovative designs like the Yamaha R6 Crossplane will play an increasingly important role. With Ten Kate at the helm, we can expect more exciting developments in the future.
