Textron Aviation Inc. has announced a significant upgrade for its Cessna Citation Ascend aircraft, now offering Starlink high-speed connectivity as an aftermarket option. This announcement was made during the AERO Friedrichshafen event, highlighting the growing demand for enhanced in-flight connectivity solutions. The upgrade comes in response to customer requests for more reliable internet access during flights, particularly in remote areas where traditional Wi-Fi services may fall short.

The availability of Starlink connectivity is made possible through AeroMech’s Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), which has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Starlink's technology leverages a constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, enabling users to enjoy high-speed internet access over land, water, and in remote locations. This advancement marks a significant step forward in aviation technology, as it addresses the connectivity challenges faced by many aircraft operators.

In addition to the Citation Ascend, the Cessna Citation 560XL series, which includes the XLS Gen 2, XLS+, XLS, and Excel models, has also achieved certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for the installation of Starlink. This certification allows Textron Aviation to offer the upgrade at its European service centers, expanding the reach of this innovative connectivity solution to a broader audience. The dual certification from both FAA and EASA underscores the aircraft's compliance with stringent safety and operational standards.

The Starlink Aviation Kit, essential for the upgrade, includes an Aero Terminal (antenna), a Power Supply Unit (PSU), and a Wireless Access Point (WAP). Installation of this kit requires only a power input from the aircraft, making the process relatively straightforward for operators. This simplicity is likely to appeal to many aircraft owners looking to enhance their in-flight experience without significant downtime.

Brian Rohloff, senior vice president of Customer Support at Textron Aviation, emphasized that customer feedback has been instrumental in shaping the enhancements made to the ownership experience. By offering Starlink as an aftermarket option, Textron Aviation is providing customers with the flexibility to choose a connectivity solution that best meets their operational needs. This responsiveness to customer demand is a crucial aspect of maintaining competitiveness in the aviation market.

Customers interested in upgrading their Citation Ascend and 560XL series aircraft with Starlink can schedule installations at Textron Aviation's North American service centers as well as select international locations. This wide availability ensures that a greater number of aircraft operators can benefit from the new connectivity features, enhancing their operational capabilities and overall flight experience.

Textron Aviation is renowned for its extensive global service network, which supports its Beechcraft and Cessna brands. With more than 300 authorized service facilities worldwide, the company is committed to providing complete life-cycle support for its jet, turboprop, and piston customers. The introduction of high-speed connectivity options aligns with Textron Aviation's mission to deliver a best-in-class aviation experience, further solidifying its position in the competitive aircraft manufacturing sector.

As the aviation industry continues to evolve, the integration of advanced technologies like Starlink high-speed connectivity will likely become a standard expectation among aircraft operators. The demand for reliable internet access in the skies is only expected to grow, and manufacturers that prioritize these enhancements will be better positioned to meet the needs of modern aviators. This development not only reflects changing consumer preferences but also highlights the importance of innovation in maintaining relevance within the industry.
