Thai Airways Axes Airbus A380 Flights on 8 Routes

Thai Airways' decision to retire its six Airbus A380s has sent shockwaves through the aviation industry, with the airline citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on passenger demand. The move marks a significant shift in airline strategies, as carriers reassess their capacity needs in response to changing market demands.

The A380, being the largest passenger jet in the world, had been a mainstay of Thai Airways' fleet since 2012, with the airline operating it on eight routes out of its main hub at Suvarnabhumi Airport. However, with the onset of the pandemic and subsequent decline in air travel demand, Thai Airways was forced to reconsider its future with the type.

According to aviation analytics company Cirium, five of Thai's eight A380 routes were regional corridors within Asia, with Tokyo Narita being the most popular destination, accounting for 2,911 one-way flights between 2013 and 2020. The airline's decision to retire the A380 is likely a response to changing market demands and reduced air travel demand.
