Maritime Pioneer Wins Gender Equality Award

Professor Momoko Kitada has been awarded the International Maritime Organization's Gender Equality Award 2026, recognizing her outstanding contributions to advancing gender equality and empowering women in the maritime sector. The award was presented by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez during a ceremony held at IMO Headquarters in London on May 18 to mark International Day for Women in Maritime.

The recipient of the Gender Equality Award is selected each year by a high-level panel and endorsed by the IMO Council, in recognition of their work to promote diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities in maritime education and professional development. Professor Kitada's nomination was supported by the Government of Japan, highlighting her national reputation for promoting gender equality in the maritime sector.

Professor Kitada has been a driving force behind creating pathways for young maritime professionals and ensuring diversity among the next generation of maritime leaders. Her work has helped raise awareness of structural barriers and identify practical solutions to create a more inclusive sector.

The IMO Council at its 135th session endorsed Professor Kitada's award, recognizing her commitment to promoting gender equality through education and research. Her academic career spans over two decades, with a PhD in Social Science from Cardiff University, United Kingdom.

Professor Kitada has been actively involved in the World Maritime University, serving as Academic Dean, Full Professor and Head of Maritime Education and Training since 2011. She coordinates and teaches in various MSc specializations, including Maritime Energy Management and Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Energy.

Her research experience spans over 20 years, focusing on gender equality in the maritime and ocean sectors. Professor Kitada is a certified Gender Audit Facilitator and expert in Monitoring and Evaluation as well as Impact Evaluation.

Professor Kitada's work emphasizes the importance of incorporating gender perspectives in maritime education and training. She actively incorporates these perspectives into her teaching, promoting a more inclusive sector for all.

The award ceremony marked an important milestone in recognizing Professor Momoko Kitada's contributions to advancing gender equality in the maritime sector. Her recognition by the IMO highlights the growing importance of promoting diversity and inclusion in the industry.
