DEME to Install Japan's First 15MW Offshore Wind Turbines

DEME has secured a contract to install 21 Vestas V236-15 MW turbines off the coast of Japan, marking a significant milestone for the country's offshore wind development. The project will be carried out by the jack-up offshore transport and installation vessel Sea Challenger, which is expected to sail under the Japanese flag during operations.

The Oga–Katagami–Akita Offshore Wind Project is part of an agreement between Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy and Penta-Ocean Construction. Japan Offshore Marine, a joint venture between DEME and Penta-Ocean Construction, will be responsible for the engineering work and vessel charter services.

This project marks the first deployment of 15 MW-class wind turbines in Japan and the first application of turbines of this size outside Europe, excluding China. The installation of these larger turbines is expected to have a significant impact on the country's renewable energy landscape.

The contract has a value of up to $58 million for DEME, demonstrating its strengthened presence in Japan and support for the country's offshore wind sector development.

DEME's joint venture with Penta-Ocean Construction will provide local execution capabilities to support the growth of Japan's offshore wind industry. This partnership is expected to drive innovation and expertise in the region.

The project's second half of 2027 timeline marks an important step forward for Japan's offshore wind development, as it sets a precedent for larger-scale projects in the country.

Akihiko Togo, CEO of Japan Offshore Marine, stated that the project is 'an important step forward' for Japan's offshore wind development. The success of this project will depend on the ability to execute complex operations while maintaining strong local partnerships.

Frank Jonckheere, General Manager Asia-Pacific - Offshore Energy - DEME, noted that the deployment of Sea Challenger demonstrates the strength of their approach, bringing together proven installation expertise and dedicated assets.
