Cargo Theft Gets More Sophisticated, Experts Warn

Published: June 5, 2025
The trucking industry is facing a significant escalation in cargo theft, with increasingly sophisticated criminal operations emerging. Data from CargoNet indicates that while the overall number of theft incidents has decreased by 10.9% year over year to 824, the financial impact of these thefts has risen dramatically, with the average value of stolen cargo increasing 42% to approximately $401,000. The incidents are shifting from straightforward thefts to more strategic operations involving specialized criminal crews targeting particular commodities, influenced by factors such as tariff concerns. Food and beverage items remain the most stolen goods, followed closely by metals and apparel.

Danny Ramon from Overhaul highlights a worrying trend towards greater organization and geographic expansion of these criminal operations, especially centered in states like California and Texas. The ongoing evolution of theft methods is making it challenging for companies to implement effective security measures. Scott Cornell from the Transported Asset Protection Association stresses that the number of methods currently employed in cargo theft has surged from a handful to over fifteen, reflecting a shift towards more advanced and international theft tactics.

In expert opinion, this growing complexity necessitates a reevaluation of security measures within the transportation sector. Companies must invest in technology that can adapt to these evolving threats, including enhanced tracking systems and improved cybersecurity measures to protect against fraud. Collaboration between logistics providers, law enforcement, and insurance companies will be key to developing comprehensive strategies that can effectively combat these sophisticated crime syndicates. Additionally, data sharing and analysis should be prioritized to identify patterns and anticipate future criminal behavior.
