The FedEx family is celebrating the legacy of its founder, Fred W. Smith, during the 88th National Truck Driving Championships, where 174 FedEx drivers are participating while wearing hats with his initials. Smith’s dedication to safety has significantly influenced FedEx's approach to trucking safety, leading to their dominance in this annual competition for over twenty years, with many top competitors having connections to the company.

Among those competing is Roland Bolduc, a two-time grand champion, who expressed his gratitude for Smith’s impact on his career and the company’s safety culture. Oregon's Dan Shamrell, also competing for the last time, reflected on Smith’s influence and dedication to safety. Chaunce Umfleet from Arkansas shared how Smith's principles continue to be a guiding force for drivers at FedEx.

John Smith, FedEx's COO for U.S. and Canada, emphasized that Smith’s commitment to safety is the foundation of the organization and that the competitors exemplify the “Safety Above All” culture he established.

The focus on safety within the trucking industry is crucial, and Smith’s contributions have set a high standard. With growing concerns about road safety and regulatory scrutiny, companies must prioritize training and cultural practices that reinforce safe driving. Establishing a strong safety culture, as exemplified by FedEx, not only protects drivers but also enhances overall operational efficiency, which is essential in the logistics sector.
